Yup. The problem is there's a lot of stations with gas and no power to pump it. Then a few stations with power that have long since pumped all their gas. The transportation situation isn't making it easy for the gas trucks to bring fresh fuel in. And then you've got a ton more people on the road since public transport is still mostly down. You've also got a lot of people who want that gas for generators....that's what's causing a lot of the fights. People in cars think they deserve it more, people with jugs dont feel they need to wait in the line with the cars. People come to fill up their truck and also five 10 gallon jugs in their bed - there's no rationing or anything, so everyone is trying to hoard as much as they can. The lines are so outrageous that people don't even know where the end is, since they cross multiple intersections, which further snarls up traffic - there are some one lane roads that are completely blocked by the line. And of course people are running out of gas while waiting in the line, or constantly needing jumps because the batteries can't handle so many stops and starts. It's just so many factors that exacerbate each other, it's just total fucking chaos.

Most gas stations that are open have a police presence at this point to keep it from devolving into total anarchy.

I'm amazed that this is going on just 2 hours away from me. New Jersey - total mess. Connecticut (Hartford area, at least) - pretty much just a bad storm and now everything's back to normal. Gas, power, food, roads, etc. are all fine.

Still about 1700 JCP&L (aka First Energy) customers still out in Wayne (me included) .. PSE&G has about 10,000 in Wayne still out of service. I am hopeful, we can be back on the grid by Monday. The lines to get gasoline, which my home generator needs, are horrible. Generator runs the Fridge and Furnace, as well as some essential lighting circuits.

It's back to 4299. Sucker!

He was so excited to get his power back he turned on every electrical device he owned and blew out his fuse box.

Still a lot of people in Connecticut that are out. I went to Target yesterday and the store was on emergency power. A couple of registers and a few lights on, barely light enough to see. My golf course was still in the dark when I played today, even the register didn't work. You had to pay for the round cash only and they were making change out of a little strongbox.

BREAKING NEWS FROM AP: The Obama administration is ordering the purchase of up to 12 million gallons of unleaded fuel and up to 10 million gallons of diesel fuel for distribution in areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy to supplement private sector efforts.

With the long lines at gas stations, someone from ATOT might have seen my son - he was the guy getting 150 gallons of diesel at a time (making everyone at the gasoline pumps have to wait, since the generators could only run one pump at a time.) No lines for diesel he said, so in essence, he got to go to the front of the line. He's working 16-18 hour days, fueling big diesel generators, so that when people use gas generators to charge their cell phones, they'll still have a signal because his generators are running the towers.

Down to half a tank now. I will be in bad shape by mid week, but I refuse to play the line game until it's my only option left. I am convinced this clusterfuck will resolve itself quickly once the power gives access to the fuel that's already in the field so I plan to wait for that.

I normally couldn't care less about the gas mileage of my cars but as I watch that needle drop 15 mpg kinda blows.

Man, staten island was annihilated, http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/11/the-forgotten-borough-ctd.html

You don't want to be on a small island when a hurricane eye wall is near. Just look at the fucking map, man

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=stat...ten+Island,+Richmond,+New+York&gl=us&t=m&z=10

I would have gotten out a day before, at least.

Got internet and tv back this morning.

Take your camera and corgi out and start taking disaster porn photos with a corgi in front of the destruction. The juxtaposition of a cute dog with the disaster might get you on buzzfeed...

I work in a NOC and dispatch guys with gennys when a CO/cell site's batteries become low, I imagine those guys are VERY busy right now! Often there's not enough generators for each site so they have to roll them around town to top up the batteries.

Wonder how many COs and cell towers were destroyed by the storm. Getting those up and running, re-splicing the copper and fiber is a whole ordeal on it's own.

They've been showing more footage on the news, it's sad to see all these houses destroyed, people's memories lost and having to start all over.

guess my plan of riding out the post-storm recovery is Maine is a failure... headed home tomorrow.

sounds like I have power again, but I've been strongly advised to go grocery shopping and fill up on gas before entering the NYC metro area.

hopefully filling my tank up in Portland and again in Hartford will be good enough.
