That's odd that you chose to mention "perfect storm." I was thinking of that movie as well and thought, "wow, same scenario of the meeting of storms, except this time, it'll be over PA & NY, instead of out to sea. I just saw mention of "Frankenstorm." It could be the worst storm to hit the area since 1938. One thing's for sure - just in case, I'll pick up about 30 gallons of gas this weekend (I need to fill the tank in the tractor anyway.) If needed, it's easy to drain the tractor's gas. That'll keep the generator going for a few days - if it comes to that. It's really more of winter prep though - where I'm at (rural), I'm a lower priority for restoring power should we lose power.

If the majority of trees have not dropped their fall foliage they will gather wind from this beast and decimate the power grid, I've seen this when Charley plowed across FL, we sat on our west facing porch and at night watched the grid implode, brilliant flash after brilliant flash, all transformers failing in spectacular fashion, quite a show until it got to us, no power for 11 days and no generator, August is a really crappy time of year in FL to be without AC. It's very gusty right now in Daytona, this thing is going to spend significant time in the gulf stream and has already gathered wind speed quickly, very symmetrical too, yet another bad sign..

Forecast tracks are shifting south further into Jersey away from NYC. They can't relax though, the models may not be able to handle all the factors as Sandy becomes extratropical.

Won't have a good idea of where it's going to make landfall until Sunday.

And that's really the big problem right there. This is a rare enough occurrence that no one has a great deal of experience with it. Specifically there's a wide-open range for what the intensity will do once it combines with the front.

Seeing reports on our local CT news saying landfall is still up in the air with 2 models showing either NJ or NYC/CT as landfall, with the meteoroligist saying it seems to be trending more towards the north. I'm just hoping enough trees fell last year that not enough stuff grew back to fall on the lines again this year. 10 days without power last year sucked.

Snowblower? That's too much like work. I just put the bucket down on the tractor & clear a 6 foot wide path. The chains for the tires are still hanging on the wall, in case things get too bad.

Nanette mentioned candles - try oil lamps some time. We've had dinner by oil lamp light a few times; it's kind of nice. We've had several gallons of lamp oil in one of our cabinets for years; never needed them for more than a few hours. Given a choice, candle or oil lamp, it's not even close. Plus, my wife seems to love collecting oil lamps.

Try it in FL, talk about miserable, 94 outside, 84 inside with 85% humidity, you ain't sleeping much, that's for sure. I have since bought a genny that will run a small window unit and a fridge..

Latest satellite shots show some disorganization and some dryer air trying to enter from the south..

Thanks for the heads up. Watching it closely.

I think the risks here are wind and rain. Not buying the snow threat except for high elevations in a few areas, at least based on the current models.

weatherman has to be the safest possible job.

you read the predictions of a computer program.

if you are right, you keep your job.

if you are wrong, you keep your job.

and those fuckers get paid a lot of money.

Any meterologists know why the path shows such a dramatic left-turn after the Carolinas? Is it heading to a pocket of low pressure? It seems so strange. Storms that usually take that path get pushed east towards Bermuda, not west.

I'm not a pro, but it is caused by interaction with the trough/storm approaching from the west.

IME, these types of scenarios are very hard to predict. I think there will be a lot of forecast changes in the next couple of days.

Sounds dangerous, hopefully the Mayor forces a mandatory evacuation of citizens to shelters again! :ninja:

Given the time of the year I seriously doubt that it will make landfall at Cat 2 or 3 that far north. Once it passes much further than 32N there is not much to feed it resulting in it turning extratropical. It will make landfall Cat 1 or lower if it lands north of North Carolina.

It will still be unpleasant though.

I read that it was supposed to meet with a arctic blast and might just stagnate around the NYC area for 2 or 3 days.
