It is? The part listed on my invoice says "Model BX80570E8400 3.0GHzLGA 775Core 2 Duo E8400Intel - Retail". My understanding is that "retail" is the boxed version with HSF, "OEM" would just be the chip. Further, in the specs on chiefvalue's page, it lists "Cooling Device Heatsink and fan included".

The E8400 is the Wii of CPUs, its MSRP was lower than its street price (afaik, still is) due to limited availability. Maybe that availability is improving now.

That's what I'm thinking. Everyone who HAD to have one already does (or the E3110 like I got). Now, demand has lessened and supply has caught up. $200 should be the "regular" price for a while.

I'm waiting for the price to drop even lower. Availability has been a problem considering how much cheaper this is than a 6850. As with all technology items the price drops over time and with newer items.

Back to the future: $190 for 3 GHz Wolfdale! Zap is right: this is awfully close to the tray price, and Newegg tends to stabilise at $190 for this price bracket.

Feel just a slight tinge of dismay that I paid $205 for my Xeon E3110. Was getting the cpu a month earlier worth $15? As it happens I'm just getting round to setting up the Wolfdale workstation in my flat, though I built the system at my parents' house three weeks ago.

These are happy days for enthusiasts; I hope Nehalem doesn't bring us a turn towards less favourable price-performance ratios.

I ended up with a Q6600 and a ABIT IP35 Pro for my personal rig, and I'm very pleased.

I'm building another rig with a Abit AB9 Pro, with the P965 chipset, for someone that wants a dual core instead. I'm thinking this E8400 is the way to go. I see there is a beta bios for the board that some say is working with the wolfdale. My question is does anyone know if one could install the wolfdale in the Abit board, and it would boot up? Or would I need to have another CPU in there first, update the bios, then install the E8400?
