Great deal, just the reciever I've been looking at for a year or so. Best price otherwise is probably at ecost.com, but that's a refurbished model you can't send back to them for about $20 more. Retail is about $500 on this unit.

I think out of the last 4 big-ticket things I've ordered through Amazon based on an AT or FW "deal" they cancelled 3 of them. And on one (can't remember what the item was now) they took about a week to cancel it, so by the time they did, the offer was over at any other sources too...I was pissed.

This is exaclty why I ordered from JandR directly. I figured Amazon's system wouldn't have accurate stock info and JandR is much better to deal with directly. Mine shipped Friday and should be here tomorrow.

anything under 50 and the dialog is hard to hear.

Is there anyway just to bump the dialog up and not make the center speaker loud. It is only the dialog i have problem with. everything else is awesome

I got the HT-S650 refurb (TX-SR500 + SKS-HT500) direct from shoponkyo a year ago for $320 shipped and have been happy with it. With J&R don't forget ebates or fatcash.

RaNDoMMAI, I don't reckon what you describe is actually a problem, if you have it setup correctly. Level 50 is only half power and with my system is probably the minimum I would listen to a movie at with more typical being closer to 60. To increase the center channel's relative volume with DVD enable Midnight mode which reduces the dynamic range. However, personally I do not use it.

At 50, it is to pretty loud and it brothers the ppl upstairs at night. anything under 40 is very hard to hear, and to me its just the dialog, i can hear all the sound effects and stuff.

You what i notice, sometimes when i pop in a dvd the reciever says something like dialog +4 or sometimes like dialog -2. stuff like that Dialog + or -#

What is this and is they like a way to set it for dialog +4 all the time?

Eh, the midnight or late-night mode is exactly the solution to the "ppl at night upstairs" thang when, again, configured correctly otherwise.

Consult the manual to adjust the individual dB levels (from Test on remote, if I recall).

I'm stumped. Any small/large/wide settings depend on the speaker drivers' size/output. I suppose small is the same as Mode 1 on mine which is what I use so all low frequencies are sent to the subwoofer. What speakers are you using? What about the subwoofer crossover setting? +4 dB center should be very noticeably louder. The "10 ft away" is not clear ... there are millisecond delay settings where the center might be set for 1ms and surrounds maybe 4ms, depending on distance. Are you certain it is in five channel DD/DTS mode? Is the speaker wire large enough? Are the connections solid? I messed with mine a bit last night and actually 50 was fairly loud with Underworld. You may want to check avsforum, hometheaterforum, hometheaterspot, etc.

Try a sound test and see if you actually get adaquate noise from each speaker. If vocie doesn;t show up but static does, then have a processor/config problem. If it is always auiet then you have a speaker/cable/ amp problem, and should check them out.

I am using JBL studio series speakers. I had a crappy sony reciever before and i never notice any problems. I am using 16guage wires. i am sure it is set to DTS or DD when i have a movie playing. All the speaker wires have banana plugs at the end of them and i just checked and they r attached fine.

What sound test should i try? the only sound test i get from the reciever is one when it makes a fuzzy sound in each speaker one by one. the fuzzy sound sounds the same in all the speakers expect for the center where it is louder becasue i bumped it up +4db.

Everything sounds fine at 50+ volume lvl but if i try to watch something at lets say 40 volume, the dialog is soft and hard to hear.

I have this same receiver... I have my center level set to +10db. You should also check the intellivolume settings for the input source you're using. It has settings that you can set so that Input Video 1 could have different settings than Video 2, etc. Finally try changing the DSP modes. Some are louder than others.

Not for me... my center channel isn't as nice or powerful (only one 4" speaker, vs the two 6" and tweeter in each of my main speakers) as my main speakers. I found boosting it to this level makes it on par with the main speakers. So now my dialog is loud and clear and when the music or sound effects come thru the main speakers it isn't over powering the center. I've also boosted my rear speakers up to about 4db to make them more noticeable. Usually they are very subtle... this lets the background noise stand out a bit more.

I'm planning to upgrade my center channel to match the main speakers (same series of speaker) and when I do that I hopefully won't need to boost it up so high. It's all a matter of opinion. I also listen to the TV on DTS Neo 6.1 movie mode. I've found this to be the best for normal TV watching

Finally got mine yesterday after long backorder. Anyone knows any good places to buy coaxial audio cable (for hooking up dvd player)?

JackieChan, coaxial "Digital Audio" cable is the same as bog standard video cable (commonly sporting yellow RCA plugs) aka "cable TV" RG-59. So don't get swindled by flashy packaging and just get what is cheap or use what you have laying about.

RaNDoMMAI, did you try Late Night mode?

I have tried late night mode on low and high, all it does for me is turn the sound effects down. the dialog is still the same.
