Alan: The truth is, for most modern-day practical purposes, you could buy just about any CDR so long as your burner can write to it at maximum speed. While Taiyo Yuden discs have a reputation of "lasting forever," that doesn't mean that other CDR's don't do the same thing. We've all no doubt used lots of non-TY discs with great results.
And, really, if it's absolutely 100% important to you that your data outlive you on a CDR, then please, by all means, pay more than $3 for 50 discs.
I burn a tremendous amount of CDs, much of it for archival purposes. I've only had a couple "go bad," and there were environmental factors at work. Most of the CDs I burn are in fact Ritek's, since they seem to have become the dominant manufacturer for TDK and other major brands. I have zero problems with them. Still, I go ahead and buy TY's when I can, especially when they're the cheapest anyways.
