I have had lower back pains (on the left side) for quite some time. It keeps getting re-aggravated. Maybe a muscle but doc has not ruled out a disc bulge. Herniated disc is unlikely as the pain is not that bad at all.

Anyway, are there any good leg workouts I can do that doesn't involve the lowerback until I get the MRI results back?

I hear advertisements for Ankylosing spondylitis on the radio all the time (at least one every hour or so). That seems to be pretty popular for back pain these days.

You didn't mention your age but it could be early signs of degenerative disc disease in the lower lumbar which is actually quite common as people age and can be aggravated by injury/reinjury.

If I were you, I'd be careful about doing any exercises that put undue strain on your lower back until you find out what the cause really is and get advice from your doc otherwise you could make the situation worse. And as you probably already know, chronic low back pain is a depressing thing to live with.

Unless you're really looking for that bodybuilder bulk, what about cycling? That's a terrific activity to develop strong legs and great cardio too.

It's not degenerative disc disease. I'm 29...I felt the pain squatting one day. It happened in an instant and has been nagging me since so it wasn't a gradual onset.

Getting in an aggressive cycling position is quite possibly one of the worst things you could do for an aggravated back, particularly if there was any degeneration or disc herniation. I don't have time to give a ton of advice, but what I do have time to say is - if your back is hurting quite a bit, extended cycling is not likely to make it better.

I can see that but I was thinking more of an upright cycling position. I guess I should have said that. In any case I didn't mean to give bad advice but I have a bit of DDD and do a lot of cycling and it hasn't aggravated things for me.

do you remember when you started noticing the pain? was it something specific that you did?

my lower left side back pain was due to a partially bulging disc that i jacked up squatting wrong like 7 years ago. it is much better to this day but it is still not 100% and i can still aggravate it if i do things wrong or just move in an odd way.

Yes, I was squatting a heavy (for me) rack and I couldn't get the last rep up and instead of dropping the rack, the moved it forward and relaxed my shoulders, causing me to lift the rack w/ my back instead of my legs

yeah man hate to say it but it could be a disc issue. it's the 2 lower lumbar discs of mine that are partially bulging.

if it DOES end up being that after your MRI, i'd STRONGLY recommend an inversion table. i didn't really do anything to treat my back pain for like 3-4 years and i would just be careful about lifts i did, and then i'd do something to tweak it and it would hurt for weeks agin. it was a cycle. then i finally tried an inversion table and after like 5 days of using it 2x a day for 5-10 minutes, my back felt better than it had felt in the past 4 years or so. and since then i've had way less back issues and i'm now squatting and deadlifting again.
