Given that it's a European Space Agency probe, I'm ready for a spectacular failure.

It would be really cool if we get a nice feed of a nice plain landscape and then we see these two eyes pop out from behind a rock..

Suddenly, from the depth ofthe midst that had surrounded us, you see a twitching figure. As time passes, you notice that it is approaching. As the figure gets closer, you realize jsut how far it is and how fast it is traveling.

Then you notcie the size of the thing.

Suddenly the red in its eyes becomes visible.

IT reaches the area quickly and makes mince meat of the probe while the camera captures it all.

In the end, the video is flickering on and off, but the audio is clear as day.

All you hear is a piercingly low growl as it mucnhes at the camera.

Then, white snow.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute, Boulder, Colo. The Descent Imager/Spectral team is based at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz.

We get signal.

Well, its alive and floating down on its parachute right now. It'll be this evening till get anything we can actually see, but it's very encouraging that they can hear a "test tone" from the probe now.

So in other words, we built it, and they put their name on it?

Macbaine:
How would that happen?

It is built by the ESA. NASA has cosntructed a few of the instruments on it, however. Why would the ESA buy something and then practically call it European? Now? It defies logic.

"
Radio telescopes on Earth confirm that the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Huygens probe has landed on the surface of Titan. NASA's Cassini spacecraft has turned its antenna to Earth and will relay the data received from the probe over the next few hours to NASA's Deep Space Network. It takes one hour and 7 minutes for the signal to travel from Cassini to Earth. The European Space Agency will get the first look at that data at approximately 11:30 a.m. EST."

What makes u assume that?

Beagle 2 and the fact that NASA have a long history of getting everything right, first time, every time. Without fail.

Big discussion going on over at the BadAstronomy website forums here

apparently the probe landed safely and is till transmitting!!!!!
Latest update I have seen:

10:15 a.m. EST: Huygens is still pounding out a signal to the surprise of ESA engineers, but any science data it is currently transmitting is falling on deaf ears.

The Cassini orbiter, Huygens' only connection to Earth, has turned away from the probe and is preparing to relay the probe's data home, mission controllers said.

?The probe has been living for more than five hours,? said Huygens mission manager Jean-Pierre Lebreton. ?But we knew at a certain time Cassini would have to stop recording.?
