How powerful is the small hydraulic motor?

this seems like a really limited use tool - areas with explosive gases, little clearance around the pipe

That little motor is impressive but @ the flow. Also 3000(max) RPM is too slow for a chainsaw. It needs to be in the 10K range.

Why? Wouldn't it just depend on the torque peak of the motor used?

Speed is important for cutting.

I'm going to guess that would be a handy saw for cutting under water.
Rubycon, with enough torque, 10rpm's would be fast enough to cut.

Sure but you want chain speed to cut!

Underwater use! Definitely will work and unlike air tools not affected by depth!

Ok I watched the ductile iron pipe demo and that took too long and is too complex a setup for the real world. Many times you have to bevel the pipe and that saw will not do that. Now you need at least another tool.
I could cut and bevel a similar pipe as fast as that chain cut it, using an old school abrasive cutoff saw.

I would think this may be for salvage/wreck work than construction though?

What about pipe that requires little prep (nohub?).

So that looks like a candidate for milling where electrical power is not readily available but a tractor is? The guys with their wood/race ported saws will burn a piston out trying to mill with 'em! LOL

We don't call that plumbing, it is utility work. If you are going into an MJ then no bevel is needed.

I've run several hydraulic and air powered saws and tools over the years, and it has it's purposes. Being tethered to a power source by a couple of heavy hoses or cables is no fun at all.

When I worked for the local electrical utility company, all the lineworkers' bucket trucks were set up to use hydraulic tools. That gave a save way for them to use power tools when they were up working on power poles. They simply ran on the trucks' hydraulic systems.

It's very slow for me because it's not a "delegated" site.

I've run several hydraulic and air powered saws and tools over the years, and it has it's purposes. Being tethered to a power source by a couple of heavy hoses or cables is no fun at all.

Not to mention a leak at 3000 psi may feel a little worse than a pinch.

I had to cut through a cast iron pipe once. Had a blade that's supposed to cut through cast iron on my sawzall. Gave up after 25 minutes. Went to the rental store to see what they had, rented the chain cutter. Was back to the rental store in less than 10 minutes returning it. That includes about a 4 minute drive each way & back and forth from the car to the second story of my house.

Cast and ductile are two different things, doc. Ductile is as tough as steel in many respects, and would laugh at that snap cutter.

Haha yes it would. Basically cast is like glass and ductile is similar to galvanized. Besides who wants to work with boring hand tools when you can use something that has several horsepower and you can hold in your hands and cut stuff up!?
