Hyper 212 plus or Hyper 212 evo?

Merely curious, How big of a difference in temps do you get with one over the other? I know the 212 evo is newer, but I was wondering how much better it is.

I have a 2500k on a z68 board that i will be overclocking to around 4.5ghz (if the chip will let me)...

The Hyper 212 plus is 19.99 on newegg right now and $40 for the Evo. If I drive a half hour to Fry's Electronics they will price match the $31 price on Amazon.

So technically $10 more....(i am planning on going out that way soon anyway for another reason. So no need to think about gas charge)

What do you guys think? Worth getting the newer model? Or not that big of a difference?

I have the Evo and I love it. The biggest difference is that the mounting surface of the Evo is completely smooth, which makes applying the thermal compound a lot easier.

They both come with PWM fans. Also as the owner of a 212+ I can definitively say that its mounting surface is awful. Great performer for price, no doubt about that, and I have absolutely no complaints about it when it's mounted and running; but when it comes time to remount and remove the old TIM, it's nigh impossible to clean it all out unless you keep dental picks lying around.

I would agree about the Evo... and I own a 212+. I'm fixing to pull mine off and try to even out the surface for better contact, I'm getting some pretty high temps (80C) with it using LinX @ 4.10GHz...

Yeah but, unfortunately ive seen many benchmarks showing the temp differences between the 212+ vs evo and they are almost identical. Anyways, I got the 212+ plus for $20 shipped off amazon. Probably would have had to shell out another $10 or more just for the fan and maybe slightly better cooling. Unless someone has definitive results showing significant improvement with the evo, id just get the normal one.

I do agree though, the surface of the 212+ even has gaps between the heatpipes and base. Kinda makes one wonder what they were thinking there. Cant be that difficult to make a surface smooth lol, especially since every other cooler known to man has flat smooth surface.

The problem is the direct contact of the heatpipes to the CPU heatspreader. It's hard to get it perfectly smooth. I would imagine they knew the 212+ was an imperfect compromise, but had to wait until they could perfect the Evo at a reasonable cost.

The performance is similar with similar quality TIM applications, but that's a lot more difficult to do with the Plus. If you're fine with the extra care required to get good contact, there's not much reason to get the Evo.

Contact plate is thicker which could help in heat dissipation.

Hyper 212 Evo/Hyper 212+

TIM always gets stuck in the grooves no matter if its an Evo or the Plus model.

SLK, thank's for the comparo photos! That explains a lot!

Not only is the base bigger, it looks like more direct contact with the copper heat sink material.....

Hmmm......

I installed my the H212 EVO this morning. Installation went without any issues. I would say "easy". I ran AMD's stability test last night with stock heatsink/fan and Temps maxed out at 63 degrees. Ran again today with exact same setting (3.6GHz, 1.4 VID, etc) and maxed out at 44 degrees!!! That's nearly a 20 degree drop!

I am sure either one is fine. I can vouch for the Evo. It's a great hs/fan!

I'd choose 212 EVO over 212 plus due to HDT heatpipes gap.... Aluminum's heat conduction efficiency is worse than copper of heatpipe in base.... In other words, the closer distance of HDT heatpipe, the better heat conduction of HDT cooler. After all, HDT heatpipes have to contact CPU surface for best efficiency.

Yeah, evo is a good choice, but as I said, if you look at comparison benchmarks, the temp improvement over the 212+ is very slight, so apparently it makes little difference.

The evo performs a bit better than the normal 212+. That being said, even with owning both, I can't really say that the evo is worth double the price. The 212+ is huge bang for the buck at $20. I wouldn't spend the money on my main rig to replace the 212+ with an evo, but I might swap the evo in from my second rig (putting the 212+ on there). FWIW, I paid $25 for my Evo at microcenter around BF and I think $30 for the original 212+ from newegg when I built my main rig. For <$30... both of them are quality performers... Perhaps you should just pick up the evo so it doesn't bother you ($10 might be worth it to prevent the "what if" mental anguish).
