At $30 is the CM Hyper 212+ still the best value in a full size HSF?

I'd be replacing the stock fan with a GT 1850 (already have a few of these)... does the 212 come with fan clips compatible with any normal 120mm fan?

I feel it still is the best. It comes with the one PWM fan mounted already and all the required stuff to mount a 2nd 120mm fan. You can mount any thickness fan you'd like too, considering the way the clip works.

I love mine - seems like a nice solid cooler, good PWM fan included, and while I got mine for only $15 after rebate, it still seems a good buy at $30.

With SandyBridge, its hard to see why one needs to pay $60, $70 or $100 on a cooler to bring temps down just a couple more degrees. I think the H212 is a great value.

The 212+ is a great cooler because of the price. This means it is possible that other coolers can be a better choice depending on sales. For instance lately Corsair has put their A50 and A70 coolers (air cooled, not the water cooled H50/H70) on sale for really cheap. I got an A50 for around $15 after rebate with free shipping. Briefly it was available for $10 with a coupon code. Check hot deals to see if the recent deal is still on - A50 for $20 with coupon code, no rebate and free shipping.

The 212+ may still be a bit better due to 4 heatpipes (but thinner ones and I think with less capacity) and 2nd fan capacity, but I wouldn't pay $10 more for it.

Alas, I'm in Canada, so I don't think those kinds of super deals apply. I've got a $30 newegg gift certificate, so I want the best thing that $30 will get me.

I've used 4 of these for different builds and love them. I think it's still a very good cooler for $30.

I was looking for a lower cost HSF for a 550 AMD system and was considering the 212+ and Gaia. Price+shipping puts them at about the same cost at the Egg. I ended up modifying the Prolimatech AM2 bracket to work with an old Tuniq 120 instead so I can't vouch for the Gaia's cooling ability.

I have the 212+ on my 1055T and X4 640 rigs. Fan is fairly quiet. The mounting system is a bit tedious compared to other HSFs but for the price, I can definitely tolerate it.

They should be about the same performance really. I would just buy the one that is cheaper or/and has more mounting options.

and http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/lga-1156-heatsink,2535.html.

They say it is the same system/test condition used on both reviews.

It's a great value for the price, that's for sure. Great for a mild OC.

I like my 212+ but hated the fan that came with it because it would get loud for a few seconds from time to time so I replaced it with this fan and its woriking great:

Agreed. Great HS with nice dual-fan mounting option, but sub-par stock PWM fan. Did not rotate smoothly, even when spinning it by hand. Replaced with 1200rpm fixed-rpm fan, now it's quiet. Sounds like the OP is going to just use his Scythe GT, so he should be fine.

I noticed the same thing. Maybe once or twice in the evening if I am at my computer for a couple hours the fan will spike in RPM then decline back to normal.
Very strange indeed.

That's not the fan, that's your BIOS seeing an increase in temperature and ramping up the fan. Probably a Gigabyte board using voltage control, right?

Never had this happen. When I run something that maxes out the CPU (like Prime95) the fan starts revving up as the temps increase and the mobo tries to maintain the stated target. When you let off the load, it cycles back down. Maybe your mobo is doing something goofy.

Yes, that's right... I've already got a GT ready to go, so I have no worries about the quality of the stock fan. I should be getting the 212 and i5 750 + P55 board tomorrow, so I will soon know if I made the right pick.
