Say a women finds a really great deal on a Christmas present for her husband (less than a year old 72" TV for 1000 bucks). Buys it and asks her friend if she would store it at her house so she could surprise her husband on Christmas day with it. During the time its stored at the friends house something happens to the TV and it gets ruined. What does the friend owe the wife who bought it in compensation, if any?

I'm kind of torn on this one. On one hand she could give the wife a 1000 bucks that shes out. Then again a deal like that on a TV doesn't come along very often and the wife is out a 72" TV which is worth a lot more than 1000 bucks.

The only thing that could make up for that would be a ménage à trois for xmas.

No more than what she paid, if that. The friend was doing a favor and as long as it was a true accident you can't really ask much more than that.

In reality, the TV would be under warranty, and it would be a hassle, but it would be fixed or replaced.

Depends on how it was damaged/who stored it/how it was protected....

This, if it was under a year. Going to have to get original owner to help you out, probably but it could be done.

If all else fails though, then the person storing it owes the buyer of the tv the cost of damage. In this case, $1,000. They took the TV into their custody and something happened to it.

Devil's Advocate: She did, however, ask him to store it rather than go to a place that would take liability and offer insurance.

Nothing, provided it was an actual accident and not malicious or negligence.

That said, homeowners/renters insurance would cover it...
