Hypothetically... let's say you had a court date today...

the city declares a level 3 snow emergency, meaning news & emergency personnel only, and the court is closed (thus you cant show up, or pay)...

Depends but here most of the time you get sent a summons for your new Court date but it is still your responsibility to check with the Court office to see when it was rescheduled.

Call the court tomorrow and get the new date and time.

Sometimes the local radio stations will make public service announcements that the courts are closed and what people should do. At least in my town the radio stations make announcements.

Does the court have a website? Maybe they post updates there?

Assuming you are in Illinois, all courts are closed and all cases have been continued. Just FYI.

There should be a "clerk", contact that person when the office opens. All cases will likely be reschedules.

Usuaully they push it back tot he officers next date, generally a month away.

But be ready to have twice as many people as before. The good thing is they might cut you a better deal to plead guilty and pay early. Call and ask for the Court/A-DA that is handling it and see what you can do.

I would be pissed if I was someone who was wrongly accused and forced to sit in jail another day just because of a snow emergency

All the court cases for that particular day are wiped from the records books and it is like it never happened.

But here is the tricky part, the court will try to fool you and get you back into the system by sending notices. Whatever you do, don't open any mail sent to you by the court. If you do, you will be obligated to answer the charges.*

Remember, don't open those notices! Score dude, you just got out if it completely free and clear.
