Around here, you see lots of credit challenged wimenz driving Hyundai. It is typically known as a "special finance, or credit challenged vehicle. So are Saturns.

Everytime I see either on the road, it screams out, hey, look at me! I have bad credit!

When I drive my Hyundai I say to myself, "Hey, look at me! My car is paid off."

No offence, but the car has not managed to establish itself, as having any class, yet.

Thats funny, in the city, when I see someone driving a 10 year old luxury car with a temporary tag on it, I think it screams "I live pay check to pay check."

I guess their marketing department needs to work harder then.

Well, it is a Hyundai. It's not a Lexus or an Infiniti. But I think Hyundai has about as much class as a Honda or a Toyota now.

Wife has a Tucson and I have an Elantra..two cars for the price of one basically..I cant say anything bad about either.
Im happy with them, they arent luxury vehicles but so far they are both reliable and are a decent ride. I get free oil changes fro the dealer as long as I own them and the warranty is pretty good.

Edit..I am not credit challenged, but I am financially challenged

Funny, that's the same thing I think about my Saturn.

True/False/Indifferent?
I have no idea, but it sounds like you could hear those complaints coming out of just about any mega corporation.

Bingo.

Huh? Every brand has some joke of a dealership that will finance people through shady practices to get them into a vehicle...it is not just relegated to a specific manufacturer.

It's not the marketing department, it's the cars themselves. If you build nice cars and put quality into the build with luxurious items in them, it will sell itself even with the high price tag.

If you go to Apgujeong, the "Beverly Hills" of Seoul, you'll see that the local Koreans prefer Mercedes, Lexus and BMW. They know it that their Hyundai is for the common folk, the factory workers in Incheon, etc.

In my previous post in this thread, I did specify the exception for Hyundai's Equus line because there are some "old school" die-hard wealthy Koreans who want to stick with Korean-made and they buy Equus or Chairman (from Ssangyong).

yeah. hyundai has turned from being a joke to being an expensive car.

Fixed.

i think a couple hyundai's ranked best in their class for safety this year too....

safety = good. i am also under the impression that respective hyundais are cheaper than their competitors for similarly spec'd out cars.

yeap. the mini-van they have is a good one. it has high safety rateings and you can get it fully loaded cheaper then most vans base options.

My '07 Santa Fe Limited gets a lot of positive comments about looks and styling. I'd say it looks better than the comparable Honda or Toyota.

My wife and I have excellent credit and we drive an Elantra. We wanted an economical commuter car that wouldn't kill us on gas or maintenance. The salespeople were shocked that we wanted something that inexpensive when we could have had our choice of pretty much any car out there. Just to twist your stereotype a little more, we traded our Saturn to get the Hyundai.

I think you're confusing frugality with poor credit / income.

What gets me are young guys, straight out of college, who waste tens of thousands of dollars on their cars when they could be doing something productive with their money.

My Hyundai dealer sent me a letter a couple weeks ago saying that they "turned in" their Hyundai franchisee license. After reading this it sounds like they were forced to. I only went to the dealership twice, once to get the car and another time to have them activate the 10 second auto door lock, but each time it seemed fine to me. Meh, I've had 3 Hyundais and I've only had to go to the dealership like twice for warranty recall stuff so it won't really effect me much. By the way I'm very happy with my Hyundai, so is my wife. And they will both be paid off within months. Nothing like having a <2 year old paid off car.

Yes, at 26 I'd rather be thought of as the guy with the "bad credit" who drives an Elantra (2005) than the "idiot" who lives way outside of his means by driving a escalade while working at circuit city...

No one has judged me for my Hyundai. Some people are shocked that it's a hyundai (it's comfy and suprisingly peppy), but no one has made a face or been arrogant. Maybe I just know more mature people that mr. wiz.

No, that's Mitsubishi. And that's part of the reason why DSM is in financial peril. They sold to the most sub-prime borrowers out there that defaulted on loans/leases and stuck DSM with the tab.

As far as Hyundai goes, my wife and I just got back from the local car show. We were shopping around for suitors to replace my wife's Highlander lease that will be ending. We sat in the Edge, CX-7, Highlander, Pilot, Outlook, Acadia, and the new Hyundai Veracruz. The Hyundai was the most comfortable, had the best interior, and was at the top for power & economy of any of the others. It also was the cheapest out of the bunch.

It was a no brainer which one we'd test drive first. The Azera was very nice as well. Certainly much nicer inside than the Ford 500 and the Chevy Impala.

The only thing holding them back right now is their name.
