HYUNDAI is cheap but are they any good?

Edit: I have my eyes on a 1997 SONATA GL, if not I guess I will get the Celica.

Hundai has improved dramatically in recent years. I would say they still aren't quite up to par with Honda, but starting to get close.

I would highly advise you to retain ownership of your scrotum rather than purchasing a Celica. Unless, of course, you're talking about the pre-pussification GT4.

Whats wrong with the Celica? I have not heard any bad things about it. I'm talking about old Celicas 90-94

I had a rental hyundai elantra for a few days when my car was in the shop (91 Geo prism.....I know...let the laughter begin.... ) I can't vouch for it's reliability but I can say that it was a suprisingly good car. I was expecting some econo cheap car nastiness but it was quite nice.

Dude, you must like pain and torture because no one goes from a Daewoo to a Hyundai. Buy something else.

You may want to stay away from older Hyundais, but as for new ones they've tied Honda in the JD Powers survey for quality and are barely behind Toyota. Of course with the kids on this board you'll probably be told how you should buy some BMW 5-series or something.

Good Luck!

My girlfriend's friend got in an accident with her 2000 Elantra. The insurance company totalled it and didnt give her enough money to cover the cost of her remaining payments on the car. The reason they totalled it? Because the airbag went off and once that happens, it's not worth fixing it.

I think they are decent cars for being so cheap with such a good warranty, but at the same time, that story makes me wary.

Highly unlikely, an airbag replacement for that vehicle is under $500 including labor.

Yup, was just going to say that there was likely a lot more damage than just the airbag.

Sounds like the insurance company were the real dicks in that one, not Hyundai. Hyundai's do have a reputation for having a piss poor resale value though so I could definately see that happening. You do realize that she could have likely bought the totalled car from the insurance co for like $300 and maybe fixed it. Just a thought.

To OP:

I like to drive my cars into the ground, with the cheap price, improving reliability of the new models and sweet warrenty I am seriously considering taking a look at a new hyundai for my next car. I just want something that is reliable and has solid acceleration and gas mileage. It can't be any worse than my neon, which chysler has left me out in the cold on fixing its design flaws.

I'd take some of the naysayers advice with a grain of salt myself...not everyone feels their penis size is directly proportional to the type of car they drive. I'll take a cheap dork wagon that gets me from point A to point B any day myself.

I wouldn't buy the old one though, like has been said...there new found reliability is just that; new.

As has been said, new Hyundais are good cars, very reliable. Older Hyundais are another thing, though. Hyundai used engine and transmission designs licensed from Mitsubishi.....which contributed to their poor reliability. As Hyundai changed to their own engine and tranny designs, their reliability vastly improved. Little wonder, actually. Buy a new one, don't touch an older one.

Who's gonna pay for the rental car when your car is taking advantage of that 10 year warranty? Certainly not hyundai...
