Old thread revived by noob with an attitude.

My girlfriend bought a 2013 Elantra Limited. When she got it there was a small scratch on an interior panel. It was the only car configured exactly how she wanted (exterior color, interior trim, and interior color) so she took it. The dealer promised they would fix it.

She took it to them and they fixed it. Once she got it back she noticed that there was a fine layer of debris all over interior trim and panels. It almost completely obscured the speedometer when the light was against it. They had also cut a hole into her leather dash trim above the trim piece they tried to fix.

We took it in for its oil change and asked them to take care of it. They said of course and set to work. They only managed to clean off half of it and said the rest wasn't going to come off and to live with it. They also didn't fix the leather.

My girlfriend didn't take too kindly to this. She and I pointed out that this was a new car and now looks like its not been taken care of and has very rough patches of interior trim because of debris they left behind. The manager argued but finally conceded and said he would fix it. He asked her to bring it back the next week, she did. They even gave her a fully loaded Genesis Sedan whose rear tyres may or may not have the same level of life anymore, but that is besides the point.

She got it back today. Now, the leather trim on the top of her dash is textured, like any interior leather. To fix the hole they decided to sand the area down, as well as the surrounding area. Now, she has a 3 square inch area of sanded leather trim that looks horrendous. They didn't manage to clean off any more of the debris, which I'll get to in a moment, and they put two more scratches and a dent in the interior trim they originally fixed. This piece of trim goes from the top of the center console all the way to the gear lever. She was so upset she took the car and left, called Hyundai customer service to make a complaint.

While she spoke to the customer service rep they told her that the debris and residue she's referring to sounds awfully similar to the same residue left behind when an airbag is deployed. They believe that the dealer originally accidentally deployed an airbag and never told her about it. From here, they are contacting the dealer to get their side but will be contacting her in 24-48 hours with a resolution.

What the F? I can't understand how incompetent a dealer has to be to do this much damage and do so little to fix it all. If they really did deploy an airbag I'm not sure what they'll do. I'm at a complete loss of how they'll fix all the trim pieces without completely replacing her interior. Since its all once giant piece on her dash and the trim piece is huge. I've never heard of this much issues with car service.

Update 11/20/13

Hyundai's interior "specialist" came out today to asses the damaged panels and clean the rest of the debris.

First, he got most of the debris but still left behind a few places. Ok, fine, but...

He damaged the paint even more on the center console panel (that runs from the shifter to the top of the dashboard), he used a solvent on the clock face and it started to eat away at the film on it which he decided he would fix by using CLEAR COAT SPRAY FROM A CAN ON THE INSIDE OF THE CAR TO COVER UP THE DAMAGE. /anger

After that he decided to continue using the solvent on part of the panel that had the paint/lettering for MP3/Aux/etc under the entertainment system and he ended up removing part of the lettering. Now it looks horrible.

I called Hyundai customer care again and voiced all these concerns. Our rep was unavailable, which is understandable, but I requested they come up with a plan to get all these pieces replaced as soon as possible. The holidays are coming up and we don't have time for these 1-2 week lead times for repair, which have only so far made things worse, and at this point it is becoming ridiculous and outright obnoxious with what we have to go through to get the damaged they caused fixed. It is a waste of our time and honestly, we don't want the car anymore in this condition. A 6 month old car purchased brand new should not have all this damage or hassle.

TL;DR - Hyundai dealer scratched and ruined my girlfriends cars interior and potentially set off an airbag. Three times they've had it to fix it but have made it worse every time.

Better document everything as it looks like it's about to get worse before it gets better.

I generally avoid stealerships because of this. I've had Dodge dealers do the same thing. I finally got to the point that I'd rather buy the parts myself and install them than let the dealer's monkeys do it on a recall.

WOW! What a way to ruin what should have been a very happy experience. Document everything and send it to Hyundai Customer Service. They might not do anything but at least you can show them the problems your facing. I really hope you can get the car fixed up right.

The other option is get the car professionally detailed and then sue the dealer in small claims court for the costs?

At the very least find another dealership for service. Good Luck and keep us posted.

This is why I don't bother complaining about minor blemishes on a new car. If I didn't notice it before I signed the paperwork I'm not going to bother complaining about it after the fact.

As soon as I read the lines about the fine layer of debris everywhere I thought, "air bag".

I would get Hyundai Corp involved.

Its easy to tell if the air bag has gone off. The numbers will not match on the bag itself and also it should be stored in the computer.

She did notice it before signing the paperwork, that is why they arranged to fix it. They couldn't the day she bough tit (too late in the evening if memory serves) but did so later, from there they just screwed it all up.

Rule # 1, never buy a Hyundai or Kia. They both suck IMO.
The other guy experienced similar crap at the Dodge dealership... didn't you read?

But yes, I wouldn't buy Hyundai just yet.... due to sub-par customer service

I have to agree with this - the factory puts the car together. Having some idiot grease monkey remove interior panels/trim and attempt to replace means a lifetime of rattles and complaints.

I'm guessing the small scratch looked a helluva lot better than it does now.

It's no excuse, Hyundai should fix it, and fix it right - but sometimes you gotta suck up the little stuff.

I can't believe they blew her airbag and didn't tell her. WTF. That's a crazy problem and one Hyundai should take very seriously.

That sucks. I'd never feel good about that car again. I'd draw a hard line and push to return the car outright and get a new one, preferably at a different dealer.

I hate dealing with stealerships. Too bad crooks wrote it into law that we can't buy cars direct from the manufacturer.

Some of these newer ECU will record an airbag deployment. Places like carmax can plug in and detect if it's been deployed. They may have seriously screwed the value of the car.

And that's aside from the other issues.

In my opinion you've given them a chance to correct the issue. It's time to contact corporate, relay your concerns, and insist on taking it somewhere else.

Good luck..

Have had great service at our hyundai dealership here... been there 4 times for inspection & routine oil changes. Always a free car wash and always out in an hour or so. Haven't had to pay out of pocket for anything yet though.

I would be furious if I were in your situation though. If you haven't, I would contact Hyundai USA headquarters. That's how it's done in the BMW world and they always get to the root of the problem (the dealer gets an earful). Remind them this is a brand new car.

It depends how they set it off.

Although I don't know about hyundais, in most makes of car, if a crash sensor is triggered and the SRS ECU deploys the appropriate air bags, it will record the event and then permanently shut down and must be replaced.

There are a whole bunch of back street garages near me, who will take a used SRS ECU open it up and use an EEPROM programmer to reflash a modded firmware onto it, allowing it to keep working after a crash.

If, however, someone had taken some interior panels off and exposed some wiring, and then set off an air bag by probing it with a DMM, or otherwise incorrectly connecting it, then that wouldn't be recorded in the ECU. Just replace the bag, and any trim panels that it trashed, and who's to know.

Well, if it bothered her then she shouldn't have bought the car. A new car salesmen would probably kill his own mother and say or sign anything to get you to take the car. And mechanics don't really give a crap about your car so I would expect them to screw it up. Especially at a Hyundai dealership.

I had a couple small blemishes in the rear quarter panel on my car, it looked like a piece of rope was across it and it made a slight imprint in the paint. I don't want the idiots at Toyota repainting an entire fender and having it not match though so I never brought it up. I buffed it out as best I could and just said screw it. You can barely see it anyway.

There is a spot in the windshield that is slightly hazy, it is kind of off to the side and it just looks like a smudge between the glass laminates. You'd have to replace the entire windshield to fix it but I don't want them messing around with the car and causing more problems so I'm just going to live with it. Another one of those you can barely see it things. Never even bothered to mention it.

If I bought a Ferrari? Hell yeah I'd complain... but a Camry Hybrid commuter car? Or a Hyundai? No fricken' way.

It's pretty hard to screw those up.

tagged. When I had an Elantra I had good service from my dealer. I wouldn't condemn the whole brand for a shady dealership.

Seriously....you bought a new car with paint blemishes and an incorrectly laminated windshield and you say, "What the heck"?

Really, I'd have gotten that windshield replaced before I took delivery or I wouldn't have bought it. If one small spot wasn't laminated properly, how long is the rest of that lamination going to last without clouding? And then you're going to be stuck with replacing it anyway, but you're going to have to pay for it yourself.

I could almost overlook the paint imperfections, but not a part of the car directly related to your safety.

Sheeeeesh. Never realized you're such a pushover at a dealer. They really must love you.

^ If you guys find any faults in things like windshield, paint, interior panel, don't buy the car. Ask for another one. The dealerships usually do crappy job trying to get them fixed. That's why I try my best to inspect the car before buying... even then I still miss out some details and find the flaws later after buying the car.

Agree with the first part, but I have not had a bad experience with mechanics at dealerships. Expensive, yes, but my experiences have been great. That included Mazda, Nissan, and Subaru. They have treated car great, and in the case of Mazda, really helped me get Mazda to cover rust issues on my wheel-well area.

Always get my car back cleaner than it was, and in great shape.
