It's around a year old but I love this article.

Text

Best paragraph:

In the end, it wasn't even close. Yes, our editors' evaluation forms showed the Sonata just edging out the Accord, but in the areas of performance and features, the Hyundai won in a landslide. Next thing you know, they'll be selling space heaters in Lucifer's 'hood.

Could you convince my mom to get a non-toyota/honda car? Altima or Sonata, perchance...

Show her the article.

If she's anything like my mom though, she won't care about what some article says. She'll want something reliable to get her from point A to point B, and Honda/Toyota have that reputation among people who couldn't care less about road tests. It takes a long, long time to change the public's perception of a car company.

that article is outdated, the camry has since been redesigned, the accord has added more features and will be redesigned next year

Finally a sane comparo, pick a budget and stick with it, instead of grouping cars together by class regardless of huge price differences.
Honda and Toyota better figure out how to offer more value for the money if they don't want to lose share to Hyundai.

Thought it was odd to compare a V6 Sonata to two 4 cylinder cars. Yeah, the Sonata had better performance but the gas mileage was a lot lower than the Honda and about 5 mpg total worse than the Toyota.

4 cyl mid level trims vs 6 cyl high end trim.

If you're going to compare price levels you also have to compare resale values, in 5 years, the Honda/Toyota will be worth $10-$12k, the Hyndai? probably less than $5-7k.

it doesn't matter if it's outdated, the point still stays true- Accords and Camrys don't offer the same things for the same price as the Sonata. It's not like the Camry got $3k cheaper or anything... if anything, it got more expensive.

uhhh, the features, trim and even warranty coverage change every year, so the reviews need to be reevaluated. The redesigned camry added alot of features and some trims are actually slightly cheaper.

The new V6 camry absolutely slaughters the hyundai by every and any quantifiable measure. It does cost ~2K more, but that is actually a mere 10% more.

Honda has such a cult like following it is going to hard to dislodge them as the #1 car manufacture. Even when there are others that are as good or better.

That's what happens when you put a smaller engine in your cars. Some like it, some don't.

The whole point of the article was that they were doing a comparison based on the average amount Americans spend on cars.

Not necessarily true. Resale value will be determined by market conditions in 5 years, which cannot be accurately predicted for Hyundai due to the rapid progress the company is making in improving quality and reliability which effects resale values down the road.
In 5 years, Hyundai will still have 5 years of warranty remaining.

Not true about the remaining warranty - we just discovered the powetrain 10yrs/100,000miles is cut in HALF when you transfer the car to someone else:

"Second and/or subsequent owners have powertrain components coverage under the 5 year / 60,000 mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty." (Hyundai's own site)

I'd rather pay a little more the car that has 15 year old earlier models still running on the road.

So you spend ~$30k and end up with ~$15k in resale ($15k loss) or spend ~$20k with ~$5k in resale (15k loss). Looks the same to me. If you are one who doesn't replace cars frequently, it doesn't matter.
