I absolutely hate working after-hours

As a network engineer at a managed services company, working after hours is sometimes inevitable. Pleasing the customer comes first.

That doesn't make it any better.

Of course our customers don't give a damn what hours we have to work, why should they care? Sure, we could bring down a file server at 5 or 5:30 PM, and all would be well. Emails were already sent out informing people that they should copy their work if they need it. But no. Their lead decides that 7PM will be more suitable.

I was supposed to be off at 4:30PM. Now my entire night is shot.

I can't stand being exempt.

Edit: Oh, and on top of all that, I'm going to install a fucking Tape Drive. Yep, that's right a tape drive. Why the hell would a network engineer be the one taking down file servers to install a tape drive, you ask? Exactly.

Oh you're exempt....well then you are getting paid.

Update your post and take out the "No pay." part.

I was going to say no pay = no worky....but you're not hourly.

Meh, I'll be working for free for most of Sunday. Stop whining and get a different job if it bothers you that much.

You must be new in the server room. "Network Engineer" huh? Sounds important. And it is. I know b/c I do the same job. But you bitch too much. Staying "after hours" is part and parcel with the job, my friend.

My "working hours" are 0800-1700. Yeah right.

I get to work at 0730 so I can enjoy my morning tea and breakfast...before the phone starts ringing from the Help Desk calls about tickets that weren't done overnight...when we're not there..

My customers are supposed to be working by 0800 but they roll in around 0830-0900 or so.

After arriving, they go to the cafeteria from about 0900-1000; then they actually log in. Lazy fuckers.

Between trouble tickets and actually maintaining the network (applying patches, backing up, upgrade projects) we stay pretty busy. Add in the numbskull trouble tickets and I don't get a chance to properly wipe my ass during the two minutes per day I get to go to bathroom.

And you're bitching about staying a few minutes late? If I get out by 2100 it's a good day. AND I'M A SALARIED EMPLOYEE TOO. Much to learn, you still have, my padawan.

*EDIT*
Thankfully, I don't work shifts. I have an "8-to-5", Mon-Fri. Except for the one week per month I carry the On Call Blackberry. I hate that fducking thing. We have a few users that work overnight. If their porn page doesn't immediately load for them, THE NETWORK IS BROKEN!!!!! OMfggggggGGGG!!!!" And I have to come in. :| Usually, it's an email problem of some type. Like when the GAL is replicating (overnight when 99% of the users arent' logged in) and they overnight user says "The network is slow...it must be broken" and I have to come in.

But I'm not bitter.

No, I'm not new. Our company had to lay off about half of its employees, so now I'm stuck doing jobs that the Systems guys should be doing.

And "a few minutes late"? I got here at 8 this morning, and I find out at 3:30PM that I need to head to our Datacenter at 7? I'm going to be working a 13 hour shift today.

Exempt = if you show up for at least one minute every work day, you get paid for 40 hours, no matter how long you work. Nothing more, nothing less.

At least, that's the way it is where I work.

Exempt just means you're exempt from overtime rules. Most exempt employees are paid a flat salary regardless of hours worked, but not always.

Ah yes, how could I forget. I didn't mention that I was woken up at 5am this morning to spend an hour looking at networks that aren't broken. I love end-users.

Remind me to never again to work for a company that supports the east coast.

13 hours wouldn't be long if I was making another 20k.

No

At least here in CA, you get Comp/Flex or whatever they heck they call it now. At our company it was better than nothing, at a 1:1 ratio.
