I almost forgot how much fun an MKV 2.0T Engine is...

It's been a while since we've had some really good weather here in NYC. It is ~65F here in NYC and I just came home about an hour ago.

Man, my car felt awesome. It truly loves this weather. I was taking it easy at first, but then I just felt like taking the long way home for fun. While I didn't beat on the car, the feel of just hitting the gears for that perfect shift with just the slightest hint of 'thump' (on purpose!) was just...so...satisfying.

I had the window down, and you could just hear the slightest hiss from the turbo, and the valves releasing air when you let off the throttle. Man I love that sound. Turbos are just so damned addictive.

Talk as much smack as you guys want about VW being shitty cars, but you can't fault the engine at all. They are really decent, fun engines when the weather is right.

Kind of makes me feel bad to get rid of my car. Today it almost felt as if she really wanted me to keep her.

I'd also have enough torque steer to ram my ass into a wall whenever I push the throttle.

That, or some awful wheel hop. Car hops enough already.

I love the new 2.0TFSI in my wife's car. Looking forward to an APR flash...just don't know if I'm going to wait till the car is out of warranty or jump the gun and get it installed sooner. I really do think it is a brilliant little engine...especially being as efficient as it is.

If my car wasn't a lease...I'd have done it the first day. Most people seem to have no problems after flashing.

Yeah...I haven't heard any horror stories either...which is unusual on the internet. That being said my wife drives this car 85% of the time...so the flashing just isn't worth it at the moment in case it ever causes a warranty issue. If I start driving the car more, I will become much more interested and may have it flashed before the warranty is over.

To the OP, if you have the FSI version watch out for the dreaded cam follower wear that will likely destroy your camshaft. You should get in the habit of checking the cam follower at least every other oil change and replacing it proactively.

Also be sure to educate yourself on the issue of abnormal intake valve deposits due to the DI-only fuel injection setup.

This is extremely rare and usually happens when you dont use VW spec oil

I like Turbos... on big ass engines. Not fond of them on small 4 bangers.

Who doesn't like them on big ass engines? That being said...they can make a 4 cylinder engine turn form being ho-hum to lots of fun.

lol, wtf is a cam follower? I always had VW approved oil, except for a period of 2 weeks when I was low on oil. Always dealer changed.

The 2.0T in my A4 QUATTRO is amazing...chip it to 250HP~~ now to get some sort of injectors, and bigger turbo...$$$ .. the pull from all 4 tires is amazing, which is one of the reasons I moved away from VW...the engine sites perpendicular also, which makes for a lot of extra room to work on it if needed.

The 2.0T have some ODD common problems across the board....here's a list I scrounged up to watch out for :

1. Diverter valve failure
2. PCV failure
3. Broken intake ducting
4. Cam lobe wear
5. High pressure fuel pump failure
6. Air conditioning does not work
7. Tumble flap failure
8. Cold start problems
9. Misfires
10. carbon build up

I've never had misfires, but there was a recall on all of my coil packs, so I get 4 new ones for free <3 AUDI.

I also had the cold start problem, but was a quick - under warranty fix.

I am worried about the cam lobe ware, because that's pretty tough to check, unless I go and replace the valve cover thingy.

I heard the carbon build up is a huge pain in the ass, because of the FSI...but again, I can't exactly check that really easily.

BOV = fail (at least w/o a proper tune).

recirculators FTW. the ECU expects the air to be recycled, not vented

Worry not so much about the cam lobe, worry more about the cam follower that it rubs up against to actuate the high pressure fuel pump. If the cam lobe busts through that follower, it can ruin the cam and part of the hpfp. People recommend checking it every oil change.

The carbon build up is a flaw of direct injection without any supplementary method of cleaning the intake valves. Toyota got it right by using a combo direct/port injection so fuel will still make contact with the intake valves and keep them clean. The only method of cleaning that's foolproof is taking off the intake manifold and cleaning it manually. After 3000 miles, it'll look just as bad as before.
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?336352-Audi-FSI-Engine-Carbon-Build-up-Megathread

A lot of the problems on that list were fixed with revised parts, most covered while under the warranty period.

I just got into a used mkv gti a few weeks ago. Had I done just a little more research and analyzed that list, I may not have signed the dotted line, but what's done is done. I'll drive the thing into the ground and the fact that it's certified pre-owned helps. I just hope anything that breaks does so during the 2yr/24k mile warranty.

When the warmer weather hits, I'll do an inventory of the affected parts and their revision codes. That way I have a better idea of forecasting when/if things might fail and not leave me stranded.

I flashed my GTI at 5k miles. it was perfectly fine when i turned it in at 20k

Were you Stage I or Stage II? I drove a buddy's Stage II GTI (racing seats, no rear seat, roll cage..) and its a HUGE improvement from stock.

I installed my boost gauge last week, APR hopefully this summer

i love the tfsi as well. I know some MKV had the EA888 not the EA113 (i think it was 2008 models) so if he has that one , it should have even less problems.

I'm also thinking APR flash someday too, but for now, its got plenty of power to be fun. its not like you can really go much over 90 without really risking your license in any normal city.

It was nice and warm today here too after 3-4 consecutive rainy weekends. Took the Cobra in to work and had some fun when I was out for lunch. Romped it like I always do, only it actually hooked hard somehow in 2nd gear on my crappy street tires. Normally just spin and slide, so it totally caught me by surprise when it just launched without arguing, and scared the shit out of me. 40 to 80 in about 2 seconds.

Boost ftmfw.

Why? This is a user/consumer/enthusiast compiled list ... almost every car has problems similar. I had not been effected by any of those problems (outside of cold starts when it was -35F...which was resolved).

OP, if you keep your car, replace the FSI fuel pump cam follower as mentioned, and consider the crankcase breather diaphragm.

Asianrice .. please tell me you haven't mutilated your GTI! haha ... but you are spot on with what every says on audzine, mnaudi, vortex, etc.

Doubt I am keeping it. I am just about to purchase a White RX-8 (maybe tomorrow actually, pending test drive) that I'd like to put a turbo on within the next few months.

Hah, no mutilation. I found a nice car that was kept stock and had regular services at the dealer = I have a hard copy of its maintenance records, for better or for worse.

I'm not into the stretched tires/ridiculously low stance look where the edge of the rim is a hair's width away from rubbing the fender.

The only mods I would consider are light power mods, a stereo upgrade, and maybe suspension to lower it a touch.

I don't have any direct experience with the 2.0T, but I have the 1.8T in my car (02 Passat). I got it certified pre-owned and ended up flashing it before the warranty was up, but I have no regrest. I've had zero problems with it in the 30k miles I've put on it since the flash. I went with APR, and would go with them again in a heartbeat. Their offering looks good for the 2.0 as well! But what I'm really waiting on is what they're going to get out of the 3.0T in the S4! I'm already saving my pennies so I can hopefully get a CPO S4 in a few years

The S4 is a beast. I never got to drive the manual version, but if the DSG is any indicator, it will be insane. 1st/2nd gear pull in it is simply unbelievable.
