I am banned from MS Windows Update site

Recently I asked my company's IT department to install WinXP for me.
The company policy allow laptop users to have administrator priviliege, and I use laptop.
After switch from Win2K to WinXP, I am pretty happy because the booting is much more faster.
However, I can not access the MS Windows Update web site.
The option was taken from Tools. I can't access Office update either.
I know my colleagues can still access these update web sites under Win2K.
Is there any thing I can do to get the access back?
Maybe somewhere under gpedit.msc?

I tried to type the URL by myself. But the web site said because for the setting in Network Policy, I can not access it.

I also asked the IT people. They told me the WinXP CD comes directly corporate IT. So this is way it is. They are interested to see if I can activate it as well.

Hmm, that is odd. I think it might be a setting in the Local Security Policy (check Administrative Tools), and you should be able to change it, if you have Administrator access.

Many companies do this so their users don't install updates before they have been tested and approved. A very good practice.

Or it can make it so that the next worm that flies in infects his machine, because the patch isn't finished the "testing" phase.

I'm guessing you're not an admin in charge of a crapload of machines? How many times have you seen a thread in this forum about "i installed patch xyz and now my machine wont boot" or any variation there of? Network policies like that are established to keep some sort of control over a users pc. if every user had the right to install or update their machine it wont be a nightmare to maintain because every machine would be different....corporate OS images are used for a reason. Generally the end users dont think that admins have anything other to do than fix their pc...

Yeah like that update 843911 or whatever that was that slowed everyones machine to crawl until MS fixed it and reissued it.
