Have been an avid AMD fan and user, but lately have decided to switch to intel as AMD in my opinion is going backwards, getting behind and going down.

I do heavy digital photography workflows, Photoshop CS, and heavy digital video work...capturing, encoding, burning and so forth.

I would like to go with a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 processor with the 800 mhz fsb but I also understand there are a ton of intel chipsets out there.

I am looking for advice on which one would be the best for my applications....needs to be durable, powerful, fast and not prone to overheating.
I also would like recommendations on the best motherboards for it...I am an avid ASUS fan for their quality..
thanks for any and all help...t

I would go for the 2.6c and the abit ic7 and overclock it. Many will run at about 3.2 with good pc3200 or pc3500 memory. Use the money you save for a better video card. The abit boards have had fewer compatability problems with memory. But if you have an unlimited budget, prescott will be out about Feb 6th, and may offer some new features on the motherboards, such as pci express and the new btx standard for mobos and cases.

I have a feeling that this thread is going to turn into yet another flame war. As far as I can see, AMD is definitely NOT going backwards with the introduction of Athlon64 and stuff.

But you made a good choice on the processor based on your needs.

Hi, did not intend it to be a flame war. I still like AMD, and instead of saying it seems to be going back, I should have said to me it seems as if they are not moving forward very much. I remember a year ago a lot of grandiose promises and so on and then things changed and got delayed and so forth. Now it appears Microsoft has thrown there new 64 OS behind the Intel 64 bit Itanium.
I still like AMD, but am tired of worrying about chipset compatibilities, overheating, durability and so on. I don't even overclock...t

Now it appears Microsoft has thrown there new 64 OS behind the Intel 64 bit Itanium.

I'm curious to know how you came about with this assumption since the OS isn't due out until late 05 or early 06.

When most performance reviews about CPU capabilities rate tha best that Intel has to offer
as being in 4th place behind 3 models of AMD 64's, it makes me wonder what your criteria is.

Sample from AnandTech

The last 2 P4's I built are dogs when compared to less expensive AMD units.
Cold boot problems, hung response. Not pleasant to work on.

Hi,

I would go with just a 3.0C. I don't think you'll notice a performance difference between 3.2 and 3.0.

As for a motherboard.... you can go with the Abit IC7 or the Asus P4C800E-deluxe.

Both boards are AWESOME! and they feature the intel 875 chipset.

The SIS 755 chipset is supposed to be good as well and since you're not overclocking, you may want to go that route if you wanna save on the cost of a motherboard.

These boards are supposedly suppose to retail for around $100 or so. Check out Anand's article on the SiS 755 chipset.
