no not a unibody.
Not allowed to link to eBay here, but I found an auction with description of "NEW Macbook Pro Unibody 17" A1297 Keyboard & Backlight" for $80 with Buy it Now option.
no not a unibody.

I know it is a bit late, but let this be a lesson to you, do not purchase equipment or models from vendors that are so proprietary that you cannot perform routine maintenance. Also, suggest to your friends and family, whose PCs you will likely be repairing, not to purchase such proprietary models.

Meh, if you get the complete care warranty EVERYTHING (except battery) is covered. We have had faculty spill drinks on them and we get the replacement motherboards. We have had people jam stuff into ports, replacement. Person closes the lid while there is a pencil still on the keyboard, smashed the screen... replacement.
Good luck finding that warranty elsewhere. There is a reason we are a Dell house, because for 4 years we don't have to worry about replacing the machine out of pocket.
I would try a local mac repair shop. Though $200 is not terrible for laptop keyboards
Yeah but covered or not, it still sucks when your cheaply made laptop fails and you have to wait for a repair/replacement.
Hand crafted by Apple's Oompa Loompas.
I will never buy a dell again. Cheaply made crap. Whole laptop casing made from nothing but plastic. Even the hinges to hold the screen to the latop was made from nothing but plastic. Really low quality.
That is one thing I like about apple, they seem have high quality material and build.
This is a macbook pro, the keyboard it self can be had for $200, but it isn't a simple keyboard replacment. the Problem with the unibody macbooks is there is no way to replace only keyboard, it comes as part of the whole top cover which includes the trackpad, power switch, and speakers. It is all one thing together and cannot be seperated.

What kind of cheap crappy model did you buy? Let me guess, you are the type who thinks that the $399 laptops must be super awesome?
I have a Dell laptop and have always bought Dell laptops and they have lasted well after the 3 year warranty and I have never had to fix any of them because they've never broken.
Dell: 1
Apple: 0
Wrong I bought the highest end dell consumer Laptop 8 years ago. I spent over 2K on the dell, and I was expecting quality. Only Dell would sell a 2K+ laptop who case and hinges was made of plastic instead of a metal alloy.
Should be very easy unless its an Apple laptop.
Maybe 8 years ago, but I'm fixing a laptop (Dell Studio 1558) that was dropped on it's corner for a friend. Cracked the bezel, cracked the screen, and broke the power button. The hinge is definitely metal as are all of the rest I've ever worked on (IT tech for 7 years including Dell Service tech for part of that). In total, this repair will be right around $100 in partsWrong I bought the highest end dell consumer Laptop 8 years ago. I spent over 2K on the dell, and I was expecting quality.
