I've come to the conclusion that the quality of dyes and fabrics that Express uses in their clothes is completely substandard. This is most evident in their 1MX shirts - when dried on low, begin to fade color quickly, far more than equivalent department store clothes which seem to just be made of better fabrics and dyes. I like the way they fit but it's total bullsh!t that they're stuff is fading like this.

Shirts coming from a dry cleaners, that are laundered, that are labeled 'wash cold/dry low', should be able to be dried without any fade whatsoever. I don't think this is the case with their sh!t products.

Now, the question is, where do I find higher quality clothes that fit the same? I need to find 1MX-style shirts to replace the two that already lost color to the point where I can't wear them anymore.

u get wut u pay for... which was a cheap 20$ dress shirt, or w/e u bought it for.

Brooks Brothers' "Brooks Basics" line has always been great for me. They're not exactly 1MX 'style' but they're nice, basic oxfords. Also, I absolutlely have fallen in love with Lands' End 100% cotton oxfords. They fit me like they're custom tailored.

The ones that are fading I didn't get on sale. I think I paid $40 for one and then $30 for the other (buy 1, $10 off a second) or something. I picked up a few more when they were on sale.

I'll have to look at the Land's End ones. I've shyed away from looking at clothes at Sears, but if you say they're good I'll definitely look at them. You say they fit you like they are customed tailored - what's your physique like?

I like J.Crew too. I have a lot of their winterish, fall stuff.

The only shirts that fit like the 1mx are the strech poplin shirts from Banana Republic. There never on sale but are much higher quality.

I've both ordered shirts from their catalog (Lands' End's, that is) and bought them at Sears...same great quality stuff. I machine wash cold, line/air dry. I'm average height (5'9") and skinny (130 lbs.). I wear a 32/16 shirt.

You mean to say they lose color in the dryer and not in the washer? Weird. How does that even work?

Why would they lose color in the washer? They lose color when applied with heat.

What ever happened with the dry cleaner? Did they pay for the shirts, or did you take them back to Express?

Not on cold they don't. Nonetheless I seperate. The color fades out of the shirt collars and cuffs with heat - that much I am sure of.

I went to New Jersey for the last week. I worked something like 70 hours so I didn't have time to call up the dry cleaners in CT, nor would it have done any good. I'm going to talk to them tomorrow, one of the first things in the AM. Basically I've already taken two shirts back to Express that did this before, and I'm going to tell the guy that it's more of a material defect than anything he screwed up. Express will take them back, that much I know. I cannot be the only one with these problems.

no matter how cold the water, your clothes will still lose color when you wash.

Dry cleaned or laundered and pressed at a dry cleaners? If you're only payin $1 a shirt, you're not getting it dry cleaned, it's just getting laundered.

I'll take pics to clarify. This isn't really fade in the sense you are thinking. Very select spots (collar, cuffs) on the shirt lose color relative to the rest of the shirt.

Express has gone down in the last 12 months. Even since Structure became Express I have stayed out.

Even though (I think) Structure was owned by Limited Corp (which owns Express brand) before they changed names, I more or less agree that this is the truth. And it's just stupid sh!t too. People do backlash against brand names, and I think once people realize the quality sucks they're going to lose sales.

As for Express going upscale, as JohnCU said, I don't see that happening in the near future.

Beer, I actually took 3 shirts back yesterday. I even mentioned that I had read on the internet that others were having this problem as well.

The funny thing is that I talked to a sales associate when I entered and she even admitted that she had heard of the problem. She took the shirts to the manager and the manager didn't look very happy and then told me, 'No, I've never heard of this problem. This is probably caused by cologne or oil/dirt on your skin. Did you wash/dry them? You can't do that.' So I of course pointed out the tag and ended up getting them exchanged.

I'm going to try dry cleaning them to see if it makes a difference. Worst case scenario is that I'll just trash them and wear my J Crew/BR shirts instead. It's just hard to pass up $20 shirts.

True.
I think my place launders for $1.25. Dry cleaning is $3.50.
