Current rig is about 2+ years old - Mobile XP 2400 @ 2.4, 9800 Pro, 1 GB Mushkin L1, Abit NF7-S NF2 mobo.

What improvement could I possibly get with an upgrade to today's latest? Venice A64, X800 XL, NF4 mobo...10%, 20% improvement? Even with overclocking. I can't believe that I have a 2 year old rig and couldn't really do much better with an upgrade. I still can play the latest games with full eye-candy. I think that speaks a lot for how the hardware market has stalled in the past few years.

I am in the same situation. I want to switch to AMD on my next PC. Currently I have a P4PE, P4 2.6 (533 FSB), 9500PRO. I just ungraded my 19" LCD to a 20" widescreen, but that was on a whim and I could have waited. I will wait until 6-10GHz CPU's are available I guess...

I have pretty much the same rig, only with lame ram, and I know what you mean. I don't think I'll be upgrading for another 2 years, when the benefits are actually justifiable.

If you can already do everything you need to do at a speed you feel comfortable with, then there's no need to upgrade. Save the money for something else.

What exactly is full eye candy in your opinion? Because I can't do it with my rig.

i will probably NOT upgrade my rig [p4@3.31Ghz/1GP PC3500] for 2-3 years except for my 9800xt which will be replaced by a cheap 6800Ultra . . .

i am a gamer and nothing i do - besides games - require even 1/2 the resources of my rig . . . looks like my primary gaming machine will be a Next Gen Console . . . i'll reevaluate PC gaming again in '07 or '06.

Yeah, i doubt that you're really able to play the latest games with full eye candy...not at any decent res anyway

Ok, ok. Well full eye candy on Doom 3 was a bit logey. I mean 1024x768 rez or higher with high texture detail, lighting detail and such. Not talking about 8x AA/AF and that stuff.

It certainly hasn't gotten to the point where I feel that I am sacrificing anything in the graphics department.

PS - Not even any compelling monitor upgrade out there. I have a Dell 1901FP which I love...maybe if they come out with a 20+ inch with that 4ms latency...then I might start to think about it...

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago, but my video card decided to stop working, so i took that as an opportunity to upgrade to a BFG 6800 OC instead of waiting for the RMA to come. I'm not even that satisfied... CS:S and nVidia apparently dont mix well. I think I can wait quite a while til I do a full blown upgrade.

So, just keep with what you have.

The only thing I want to upgrade are my displays. I would't mind Dell 2405FPW and would love to get the Apple 30" Cinema display. Plus something like Panny AE700, Benq PE7700, or Sony HS51 projector would be awesome for my games and movies. Like you I'm dying to upgrade and money is not really an issue but I can't justify the need other than it would be cool. But I'm a Hot Deals junkie so a great deal would probably push me over regardless of my needs.

If I were you, I'd wait until the dual core (X2) athlon64's come out. Should only be a couple of months now (hopefully). That'll be worth upgrading. Also, you might need to upgrade your MoBo then.

If you really have money burning a hole in your back pocket, get yourself a new graphics card. The 9800 is still good, Id wait for the next generation of Cards. And remember, you might have to get another new card if you upgrade your MoBo for the dual core CPU's.

Anyway, at the moment I'd just wait for the dual cores. Then look at upgrading.
