Seriously, though, good job on getting DSL - you'll never go back to dial-up. I've had cable since 1998, if I had to guess. Originally with @Home, who I think was the only massive conglomerate that was doing cable at the time. It was a very bizarre setup.

Congrats. I'm about to upgrade my internet from...

245kbps wireless (I used the CNET bandwidth test, our router sucks)

to

3000kbps wired (getting new internet service, moving from 1.5mbps verizon, to 3.0mbps earthlink).

We'll only pay 5 bucks a month more.

either you're stupid or not very knowledgable. not every place in the world was able to get broadband 10 years ago. i was only able to get it about 2-3 years ago in my area.
rural areas are slow in getting new technology.

Darn, I am stuck with BellSouth DSL 1.5MB for about $40 a month. I wish I can have SBC for less than $20. Our Cox cable is about the same price <you have to get cable tv if you want to get broadband from Cox>.

OP, you will love broadband and won't want to go back to dial up ever again.

When did you first get broadband and how was the cost/speed?

I signed up for SBC's $14.95 deal for one year in June. I'm scared of what it is supposed to be after that year is up. My letter from them says $50 and I will not pay that.

From what people here are saying, it seems that you can negotiate to keep your prices the same for another few months. The full price of the 1.5 meg line is 26 bucks a month after the 6 month deal is gone.

man...sprint is raping me in the @ss! i pay like $70 a month for 1.5 mb DSL...
and i can't change because there isn't anyone else that offers it in my area.

i've only had it for about 2-3 years now. i signed up for it the day it became available.

Check what the current deals are and re-up. We had 1.5/368 DSL for $50 starting in 2001, but then about 1.5 years ago, I checked what the current deal was and it was 6.0/512 for the same price, so I was able to upgrade for free. Once you are out of your initial contract, you have lots more flexibility and bargaining power (plus, prices for DSL service always come down).

Cool. They will never tell you that they lowered their price. They'll keep you on the same plan and same price for 50 years if you never notice. Just like cellphone service. That's why I check on these kinds of things every so often.

Just paypal me that $5 a month when you get a chance. : )
