20 cents. The difference was just 20 cents.

If the bill was $18, as you said, it's easy to do 15% in a couple of seconds in my head . . . 10% is $1.80 and 5% is half that, or $.90 = $2.70.

You said you left $2.50.

Ergo . . .

Still, I'm guessing you left yet another piece of info out of this, that the 15% tip was mandatory and thus itemized on your bill, and thus the total bill was printed out and staring you square in the face, and you underpaid.

Else, when the guy came after you, you would have just, rightly, laughed in his face.

Amirite?

convenience store worker will teach anybody just how many assholes there are in the world.

I would seriously recommend it for anyone so they learn what customers are really like.

Fast Food worker. Seriously you meet some of the biggest assholes. Dont know how many times people would complain they didnt get enough fries or not enough pieces of cookie dough in their blizzard. Then we show them the actual sizing tools and they just wont believe it saying your making it up and crap.

The bill ended up being $18. I had $20 and a quarter on me, so I just gave them that instead of charging it. So what happens? The boss chased me down to say I did not tip 15%. I mean, OK, it's 50 cents dude...I really did not think you would mind....

So, fine, he wants the 15%? I demand my cash back and take out my Amex card. He was not happy at all, but wtf! really, all this 50 cents?

Ugh, this is one of the worst things about America. Someone chased me out of a bar once for not tipping. I told her to get stuffed.

In Canada waiters get paid hourly, at least $10.25 an hour, i think that is the average minimum wage. Tips are extra, no entitlement.

In the states they basically work for free and their only income is tips. That's why they feel entitled i guess. Weird way to do business, ought to be illegal to hire someone for no wage.
Wrong-o!

In 100% of the states, servers MUST make at least minimum wage within a pay period. If tips don't exceed minimum wage, the establishment must make up the difference.

But in some of the states, servers already make minimum wage base salary, and tips are just gravy.

The worst part about it is the inconsistency. If I tip 15% in Washington state and 25% in Delaware, the server in Delaware takes home less money at the end of the day!

wage varies by province. Ontario is less than minimum wage and then + tips to make it up.

It's in part because waiters/waitresses need to tip out to the house, tip less than 15% and it comes out of their pockets.

IMHO that's the biggest racket of all - the whole tip out system needs to be rejigged.

this. a runner at my regular place (i know most of the staff and the owners) ran into this a lot...they get a couple of bucks an hour plus tips, and she only worked day shift (because shes lousy and cant handle a night shift) and once or twice a week they had to pay her extra to cover her up to minimum wage.

sucks for her...sort of sucks for the business, i guess, but oh well

Reminds me of a place I went to with my family one time. They tacked on a 18% tip for a party of 6 or more. I wouldn't have a problem with this but the waitress decided that since the tip was already added on, our service was terrible. Didn't get our orders right, water wasn't even refilled, and didn't even come over to see how the meal was or if there was anything right or wrong.

When the bill came, I actually subtracted part of the tip before I signed the receipt. I think I left 10% tip.

The manager came running out saying I couldn't do this. I said I was not changing it for the fact that our service was terrible. I told him that the waitress was lucky to get even 10% for the service we got. I told him if the service was better, this would not have been a problem. He accepted my answer and that was it.

I went to a sushi restaurant that advertises happy hour from 2 to 5PM. I got there at 4:30 and started ordering sushi. When I was done eating at 5:30, instead of a bill of a $1 a piece it came to about $3 a piece. I complained and they said that since the bill was calculated after happy hour, I had to pay regular price. To avoid an argument, I paid, but left no tip. I started to walk out and two Japanese waiters started to chase me down. I got to my car and they started tapping on the glass wanting a tip.

"You must leave a tip!"

I told them to leave or I am calling the police. I actually had to call 911 on my phone before they left me alone. Three months later this place closes.

Not here in California, here they make around $8 to 12 an hour on average, minimum is 8 here, plus tips are still expected.

I have no problem with tip-based jobs. It's basically like having a commission-based sales job. You make money based entirely on your skills. Those who don't appreciate your skills don't pay for them. Abolishing tips would just distribute the increased wages to all patrons (instead of just those who appreciated the service) and would leave little incentive for service professionals to go above and beyond.

Mandatory tipping is stupid. I don't think anyone could disagree with that.

I've heard of Americans being arrested for not tipping. Very bizarre.

I've saw an Ramseys shows where a restaurant owner will keep extra staff, more than he needs, just because he doesn't have to pay them.

Ive given big fat zeros with a huge cross through it for bartenders who make my drink with 10% alcohol and 90% mixer. Also this one time at Vegas where I stood at the bar for 30 minutes before they took my order. ZEROOSSSS

I'm pretty sure the FLSA requires that any employee not making at least minimum wage when combining tips and $2.13/hr has to have their pay bumped up to at least minimum wage.

I know for some chains, the percentage you make in tips determines what sort of shifts you get. My girlfriend's chain enforces an 18% policy. Make at least that much in tips and you get evening shifts which have higher turnouts with typically larger orders and larger tips. Make under that and you put on morning and lunch shifts where you can't make as much money. It's stupid and seems backwards, but that's how it's done. And I believe the federal required wage for tipped positions is only in the $2-$3 range, so waiter/waitresses literally live off their tips.

Many states and locals have laws that mandate 8 to 11 an hour BEFORE tips to these people.

Did anyone see that Sopranos episode where the waiter ran outside to demand a tip on a $1200 food bill from Christopher and Paulie... Paulie shoots him, lol. Then they steal the $1200 they gave to him in the first place and split it, LOL!

Dont get me wrong though. If bartender takes care of me, I take care of them. At Drais in Vegas, there's a bartender that makes my drinks 80% alcohol (with top shelf bottles) and 20% mixer and would give me free waters if I ask. She would charge me a flat $20-30 bucks the entire night for about 4-6 drinks and I'd tip her $60-80. Keep in mind this is $15 a drink and $10 a water lol.

Okay.. two people I count in this thread say 18% tip is normal according to "company policy". Article I read today about cheap Quebeckers not tipping also said restaurants/waiters tacked on 18% tip.

When the fuck did tips become 18% "standard"?

Think the "standard" was 10% when I was growing up, then 15% for the past few years or more. Is it going to be 50% at some point?

I give 15% minimum using after-tax price regardless of service (even when the waiter disappears for half an hour), so it's effectively more given the "standard" pre-tax price. Sometimes I'm in the mood to give 20-25%.

In other words, she steals from her employer and you abet her theft...

I usually do 15 for decent service, 10 for poor service, 5 for very poor service, 20 for good service, and 25 for great service.
