Hello,
I am going to replace my asrock fatal1ty z77\i7-3770k mb\cpu which has stopped going into BIOS and will not boot.

The system is used for everything except gaming.

My question is what motherboard and cpu should I get? I would like a motherboard with the same functionality and features as as the Asrock fatal1ty I have now. I would like a cpu that is as least as powerful as the i7-3770K. I have no plans on overclocking.

My price range for this combo is around $700.

Thanks in advance.

Why replace your mobo and CPU? Most likely, since you didn't overclock, only your mobo is faulty.

You are right. I was going to use the malfunction as an excuse to upgrade my system. I am looking for a replacement of the 1155 mb too.

Hmm.. If you're putting an i7-4770 into a Z77 MB, I think I might have an idea why your system won't boot. Is that a 3770?

My mistake, it is a i7 3770k cpu. It has been 2 or 3 years since I built the system. I will correct my mistake.

Whoops, I missed that. Now let's start over.

What is "everything"? That could be anything from web browsing to 3D CAD work.

That's certainly enough to work with for mobo and CPU, presuming you're in the USA like your sig suggests. How much RAM do you have? And do you happen to be near a Micro Center?

Oh, and do you have an SSD?

I am not currently doing 3D CAD work but who knows what I will be doing in the future. I wrote everything except gaming because almost everyone here seems to default to gaming when they talk systems.

I currently have 16 gb RAM in the system and will probably have that amount in the new one.

I am in the middle of Indiana. I think there is a Fry's in Indianapolis now.

I do have a 128 gb SSD but I was thinking about using a 1 tb hard drive.

You don't want to run your operating system or programs off of a spinning disk. I'd rather spend the money on a large solid state drive than a platform upgrade if the alternative is using a traditional hard drive, since Skylake (Intel's latest Core design - generation 6) isn't all that much faster than what you have. You'll probably perceive your new system to be slower than your old one if it ends up on a mechanical drive.

You might consider going with LGA2011-v3, which has higher core counts of Intel's Haswell (generation 4) CPUs. You can get a slight per-clock bump (~5-8% maybe) and more cores. 6 cores come in at around $400 for the CPU, and 8 cores come in at around $1000. Motherboards are more expensive than the consumer platform though (socket 1155, 1150, 1151), and you have to use the more expensive DDR4 RAM as well.

My opinion is that unless you have money to burn, or your livelihood depends on how quickly this system gets things done (and you're frequently waiting on it), you're not going to get much bang for your buck by replacing the CPU and motherboard; Things haven't come very far since you built your system. Go on eBay and pick up a $50 motherboard and sit on it for another year or two.
