My system is in the sig all except for a new motherboard. I got the MSI 815e Pro. I had trouable all day on the 24th and just put my old motherboard in yesterday morning for the christmas party that night. Now it is time to try and get the ah heck working. Just a few questions...

1)How do you disable the onboard sound and graphics? Is there a jumper or is it in the bios?

2)Would not disabling the onboard sound/graphics cause my sound blaster to not work at all/slow my graphics down?

3)Whenever I try to install my sound blaster I get freezes when Windows tries to initialize it or something, how can I fix this? probably by disabling the onboard sound...

4)When I have an agp graphics card in (like my 3d prophet), does the onboard graphics automatically turn off?

5)Can I use 3 sticks of 128 mb mushkin rev2 ram in there or just 2 only because of the chipset regulations? I haven't tried that yet but right now I am in the middle of purchasing ram and I might jus tbe forced to get the 256mb version.

Any help would be much obliged...

What odd questions. Haven't you heard of
a) manuals
b) manufacturers websites
c) expermentation

? You aren't going to blow up your motherboard by trying out these things.

They include manuals with hardware for a reason. Even though a lot of people here are experienced and more than a couple will most likely know to do that, you would save yourself time by reading it in the first place.
Seeing how these are important issues they are not likely to be hidden in the corner of the last page.

1. Check the manual.
2. Yes - disable 'em if you don't need 'em. edited
3. IRQ conflicts? - probly yes.
4. Check the manual.
5. Yes - 128MB sticks usually run at a lower latency (lower is better).

?? Why a new m/b? The Abit Be6-2 is a good board!

You can disable Sound fuction through the Bios but donno anything about VGA. Maybe you can just change prioirty of boot VGA from PCI to AGP.

In case if you are overclocking cpu, then change core speed back to normal speed. I had same problem with celeron 533A, It was caused by high PCI clock.

read manual! If you want to use more than 3 memory sticks then, be aware that you can only use two sided memory on bank 0 & 1. and bank 3 & 4 does not take double sided memory.

You know why I think its messed up P). For real though... try to disable the onboard sound (should be in bios because I could not find any jumpers on the mobo itself.) Also disable the video (same as above). If that doesnt work, step through your boot files (press F8 while starting and select the option "step by step" or something of that natiure). This way you might be able to tell whats locking it up (that is if you can get at least into loading windows.) If that doesnt work, boot into safe mode and check out your irq's and make sure none are conflicting. Take out all the hardware you dont need just to see if it boots. Also, take out your vid card and sound card and try to boot w/ the on board stuff just to make sure the mobo works... if all else fails... RMA baby!

1 Its in the award bios, make sure you also dissable the midi and game device controller in the bios also if your going to dissable onboard audio.
2 Yes, get them dissabled in the bios
3 Yes
4 yes
5 Yes But I have have been currently running three sticks of 128 double sided dimms have had no problems but I have heard this issue does exist with this mainboard. If you run into anymore issues, feel free to private message me instead of getting to flamed to death for asking a freakin question.

your manual should have the bios settings detailed and somewhat explained. I also think its hard to believe that nowhere in your manual it says anything about your onboard audio and/or the video. Also, did you go to their website (msi)? Also, have you even got into your bios and looked? that may help

do some research before you post... 90% of the time the answer is out there in plain sight.

The MSI 815e Pro manual is not well written and there is no documentation for the onboard video question or the ram question in the manual. Dissabling the onboard audio is in chapter three page seventeen listed as AC 97 audio. It is common sense to look for these setting in the bios and in the manual, but he may be new to all this so cut him a break and help him out. We where all new to this at one point in our lives.

Ragiepew was there, I read the manual many times. It didn't say anything about disabling the onboard video or sound and the descriptions for the bios were pitiful to say the least. Whoever convinced me to buy this board sucks(LXi). just kidding, LXi is the man but I really don't know about this board.

Anyone know MSI's website?

I just tried to reinstall my new motherboard(again). I got into windows, it installed all sorts of drivers and then I a problem that said I needed to get new drivers for my graphics card(newest ones possible right now already) The onboard graphics must really be screwing things up. Then I tried turning my hard drive and cd-rom onto dmz which was disabled for some reason and I could no longer boot into windows. I always got stuck at verifying DMI pool data or whatever. So then i just reinstalled windows and it restarted for the final restart of installation and I could not boot into windows! I could only go into it in safe mode. So then I tried removing the drivers and stuff for the onboard midi and most of the motherboard crap. That made not even be able to boot into windows safe mode. So then I switched back motherboard and was able to boot into windows without any changes to windows! WOW! This motherboard must really be screwed up!

Mastermind- There is no doubt in my mind that the BE6-2 kicks ass, but I needed a new board for a couple reasons. Some being that I am building a system comprised of old parts and I needed and old motherboard for all the parts and another reason is that for overclocking purposes I need a 1/2 agp bus ratio because my prophet cant handle barely any extra fsb at all.

I am really wishing I got the CUSL2....!!!!!

I think the onboard graphics disables itself once you plug in an AGP card. Just make sure that the display order is AGP/PCI.

Try putting the SBLive in another pci slot. The SBLive is probably sharing a IRQ with a device it doesn't like. Also, if your not using any serial devices, disable serial port 1 and 2. Doing so will free up some IRQ's

From what I remember, i815 boards are not stable with 3 dimms fills. Some have posted results that their boards are stable while alot of others have posted it crashes alot. I guess you'll just have to experiment on this one.

When I tried it, I had only my graphics card in and I have only been doing it with one dimm filled(the first one).

syboy.. If youve tried everything then the only thing left is RMA. I am getting a bad feeling about MSI though... I had a slot 1 board from them come in DOA and now to see this happening to you... hrmm. Anyway, good luck.

Give me a break, whats the big deal here? RMA for what? MSI doesnt make low quality crap.

All 5 questions can be easily resolved. Like Raincity said, disabling onboard sound is a breeze, once you do disable them then install the Live! drivers, if it keeps failing then try not overclocking, and try different PCI slots, preferrably not sharing with anything, espeically your modem. Onboard graphics disables automatically once you plug in your AGP slot, its easy as that. To the final question, you need to decide whether you're going to need more than 256MB or not, if not, get two sticks of 128MB. If you plan to use more than 256MB in the future then get 256MB. Personally I would get 256MB just to be safe.

Oh yea, if you didnt know, you cant swap your motherboards without a clean installation of Windows, try reformat and clean install.

I know so many people that have changed motherboards without reformatting that that will be my last ditch effort. Someone has to know what the problem is here. Could it be my 200 watt power supply? Most likely not since I doubt it sucks tha tmuch extra power than my be6-2. I did have my system running on the new board for a while but two incidents both screwed everything up, one being trying to enable DMA support and the other being enabling my sound card

You need to reformat period. end of discussion. Why dont you try doing the things we have already posted like shutting down the onboard audio and midi controller and install your video card and your Sblive on pci slot 3 and give it a try before you go jumping the gun and blaming it on your power supply and other things. I am going to try to be as polite as I can on the subject but you need to pull your head out of your A@@ and use alittle common sense and some basic trouble shooting skills before you go jumping the gun blaming it on other devices and trying to rma back the board. These false hardware failure rma are the cause for rma return fees and higher hardware prices becuse there has been too many users returning boards that where not defective and problem was user error in the setup.

I wasn't saying it was my power supply to blame. I was just putting it out there that it was a little 200 watt one. I DID shut off the midi and onboard controller and I did not even try to install the SBLive the third and second times. THe only things which I tried to install after the first time were my cdrom, my hard drive, my floppy drive, my graphics card and everything else on the board like memory. So don't give me sh!t about not trying all the things said in here. I mean, come on!, who is very willing to always reformat their hard drives? I had to do it just a couple weeks ago and am not very willing to reformat because it took 3 lan parties just to recover most of my stuff. I guess I will just take an old hard drive from an old computer in the attic and try to reformat that one. The only thing I have not tried is reformatting so I might be forced to.

I just ordered this board yesterday and have been reading about. It seems that the SB Live and this board do not get along. You will have to use the onboard sound for now. 6 channels sound pretty cool. As far as disabling onboard sound try jumper 11,13,15.

11-13 pin
Short 11-13 pin to disable Onboard Codec.

13-15 pin
Short 13-15 pin to enable Onboard Codec.
