there is no way it would go away, worst case they'd have to sell out and someone that knows how to run a business would take it over, then instead of a begging banner they'd have an ad banner, just like anandtech
So, you like ads?

Every smartass on this forum takes his or her position on a matter and never sees the other side of it.

You like beggars?

Crono had it right.

Wikipedia is run by hypocrites. You can't pride yourself in being a free resource but flash the fact that I "could" pay them if I was a good person. (And don't try and turn that shit I just said around, that's basically what the banners right now are trying to make you feel.)

Fuck 'em. Let them sell the site if they can't make money of it and then let them put some banners up. At least Firefox will let me filter that shit out.

Anyone know if you can filter that banner out on wikipedia btw? It'd be very helpful.

(Btw, I'm all for non-profit organizations. Hell, I'm even about the little guys. I even gave money to Maddox, but specifically because he doesn't ask for donations on every one of his damn pages.)

yeah, craigslist figured out a way to make money without banners, if wikipedia doesn't want to figure something else out, then they can beg or they can run banners or they can sell out

That's how every other non profit works. After they get the needed money, you won't see the ads. If your really against it, don't use them, and do your own research ;^)

They have a donation drive every year, Wikipedia has always been free and ad-free thanks to the support of donors. I also don't look at the banners as trying to guilt trip users, but obviously others have a different view of them. Now a guilt trip is when somebody calls you on the phone and asks you to donate some money to the Special Olympics or something like that. I always feel like a dick telling the person no thanks...

And FoBoT, as far as Craigslist goes, they charge fees for certain types of postings. Wikipedia doesn't have that luxury.

Haha. Do my own research? Thanks...

I kind of have to. No school or professor will worth a damn will let you cite Wikipedia. You'll have to cite the article/book/whatever Wikipedia points to and that extra resource would've been found using an academic search engine all colleges and universities provide as part of your tuition. (Or maybe just google harder.) Hell, my high school provided free academic databases. I can even use googlebooks and not have to worry about being guilted into "donating" money. Google fucks me face forward; ads straight up. I don't mind it. Google helps me.Wikipedia doesn't. It's an entertainment.

Anyone calling Wikipedia a luxury is looking at the issue too deeply. Wikipedia is a convenience, that's for sure. It'd be a luxury if it was a citable reference and at that point, I might pay for it. On top of that, I really don't agree with the way they ask for donations with those banners. It's shameless. Mark my words. They are the PBS of the future.

Whoa. Looks like you have a lot of pent up emotions about this. I'm glad you had a chance to vent.

I had no idea there was such brewing rage out there about wikipedia. Looks like we're well into the rage era.

Wikipedia has never been completely trustworthy, susceptable to hackers, and pretty much about worth what you paid for it - nothing. I do admit to using it now and then for a cursory scan of certain subjects. As mediocre as that site is, it is leaps and bounds better than that bunko site "snopes". You can tell they didnt put a whole lot of thought into that site just by the stupid name "snopes".

Snopes is nothing but pure lies and you are a fool to take their opinions as fact. A fool!

Wikipedia isn't ideal for real research. It's good for a quick tidbit, or a jumping off point to look further into things. It's also a great repository for pop culture trivia that you won't find collected elsewhere.

I'd estimate Wikipedia's more accurate and thorough than anything you'll find on the "educational" TV shows(Discovery, History...)

why not
i am not saying the craigslist model is there best solution, i am just saying maybe they should consider all the options

maybe there is some content on wikipedia that could be subscriber based or on a fee basis while the normal crap remains "free"

i am just saying that if the owners are smart , they'll figure out what works best
right now, they are trying begging banners, we'll see how that works out for them, i guess
