Really. Freelancer didn't do it for me. I'm missing Allegiance, but the free servers don't ever work for me. *Sigh* Where's Chris Roberts when you need him?

Off making bad movies (He's probably apprenticing with Uwe Boll as we speak)

A modern DX9 shader-crazy remake of WC 1 - 2 and expansions would be excellent.

I still have fond memories of finishing off that last Kilrathi fighter, with 0 afterburner fuel left and one working laser cannon, then limping back to the carrier with my control panel sparking and ship 90% destroyed.

I recently had a spark ignite my penchant for sci-fi space sims too. Actually, not necissarily space sims, but something to do with space exploration.

See, I use to play Space game when I was a kid and I absolutely LOVED it. It was called Starflight -anyone else remember that?

Well, it was a game that consisted of you traveling the galaxy, finding solar systems, and then landing on those planets and traveling around them trying to find resources (kinda like in WoW) and then selling them for money, so you could then buy better ships to fly faster and farther. There was also fights you could get into with pirates. Damnit, it was awesome. Let me see if I can dig up the humongous map that came with the game.

Each dot is a solarsystem that you could enter. Its HUGE! This game came out in the early 80s. Here are some screenshots:

Here is a screen shot of what it looked like when you were just about to land on a planet. It would tell you what minerals where on the planet and such:

Once you decided that you really were going to land, you had to choose where. In the upper right-hand corner there were X and Y cordinates and you could move those around to pick exatly where you wanted to land:

Here is a shot of your little tank/mineing machine that you used to explore the surface once you landed, notice the little black "Xs", that means there is some oil/coal to mine there:

Another shot:

And another. There is your ship on the left:

*sigh*...anyways....I too, long for some kind of space exploration game too.

I still have a copy of Starflight for PC on 5.25" floppies. I played it on my 286 12 MHz with 512K RAM, 65 MB hard drive and 256K VGA card, sweet!

Oh come on, the guy directed 1 movie (Wing Commander) which was about a million times better than any Uwe Boll movie. It wasn't great, mainly because of bad casting, but it was entertaining for what it was.

But he is now producing movies full time (The Jacket, The Punisher, Lord of War are a few recents)

I still can't believe I actually finished WC1 and WC2 and all their expansion packs using only a keyboard. :Q

But those days are long gone now.

Speaking of WC1... anybody recall that crazy-hard Kurosawa mission? The one where you need to stop a bunch of Grathas from blowing up a captured Ralari? :|

Ahh that's a sweet link to the Elite II page... i'm gonna have to check those games out even if they suck . When I was a kid I played Elite on my C-64.... I loved that game, I played it a ton. Every now and then I'll load it up again on an emulator. That game had a lot of potential... it didn't quite live up to the potential but it was still a lot of fun. A modern version with all the things missing from the original would just rock.

Didnt we just have a thread on this same issue?
Anyway, I think the main suggestion was to get a hold of Freespace 2.

it be nice to have another wing command game, but dont count on EA brining one out anytime soon. I hate EA for buying out the wing commander series.

Yeah I'm a big space sim and space strategy game buff. Everything from XCom to Master of Orion to Privateer to EVE: Online to Independence War. I loved em all.

It's been a long time since I played one though, since there simply are no good new ones.

While Star Control 2 was an awesome game - it's not remotely in the same league as Wing Commander. But thanks. I've also found that the sourceforge project (which is based on the original Amiga version) has a few bugs and just isn't the same as the PC version was.

Oh the memories.

OMG, that one was really hard.

Or flying in the Drahlti in SM2, when you got into a battle, it got tough...

Wow. Privateer. What a great game that was. So revolutionary for it's time. I'm gonna check out that project.
Thanks a lot, Hopeless!

I noticed X3: Reunion was not mentioned here

In another thread talking about space sims/rpgs there were some recommendations for X3:reunion, which is a brand new game I think (released this past December ?). I haven't tried it but on paper it sounds awesome. Anyone here recommend it?
