GF,
I don't know how it is in NY, but here in CA it is a good idea to get uninsured motorist insurance. (UIMI) (I don't know if it is only offered here)
The thing is, if you have UIMI and are involved in a hit and run, you don't have to pay the deductible. (Anyone correct me if I am wrong but this is what my insurance agent tells me) If you happen to have UIMI, that is the way to go.
I got hit-and-run and did not have UIMI and had to bite the bullet on the deductible. My agent told me that if I had UIMI, I wouldn't have had to pay anything. I have insisted on having it since. Like I said though, I don't know if it is offered anywhere but here.
Not that it helps you now, but if you don't have it, look into it. I think it costs me all of $4 a month extra to add it to my insurance and you also don't have to worry about that person driving around w/o insurance. The insurance co. pays the deductible and everything if you have it.
Also, I know it stinks to have a car wrecked (I have been in more than 10) but just be glad you weren't in it to be hurt (no amount of insurance makes up for bad injuries). So at least you have got that going for you...
