You're asking an internet forum full of armchair Chuck Norrises, whose bulk of martial arts experience comes from Asian B martial arts flicks, which martial art is the most deadly?

Brazilian Ju-jitsu hands down. The only problem is you may have a hard time finding someone who is competent teaching in your area...

True. You should definitely try a few if you can, though- more important than "deadliest" or "most effective" is how well you take to it. Some people prefer high/powerful kicks and feel most comfortable with Tae Kwon Do, others are more interested in a balance of intricate joint locks and strikes and go with a Kenpo, and some people love a high-contact wrestling-style ju-jitsu.

edit: Muay Thai is awesome.

For a fun experience and good exercise I would learn Shaolin Kung Fu, but that isn't what you asked. If I wanted to learn how to survive in prison, for example, I would learn Krav Maga (see Jason Bourne movies).

This.

Though if you want to devote a lifetime to it you should have a wide base...probably Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Boxing, Wrestling, and either Karate or Tae-kwon-do. That covers all of the various aspects of fighting.

how much bruising / broken bones should one expect from doing it? I know it's inherent with some contact sports and I've taken my lumps... anyone with actual experience in some martial arts?

Depends entirely on the style, and the school. Different levels of sparring and contact with each of them. I've spent about 20 of my 36 years active in different schools and my worst injury has been some bruises and a couple mild sprains. You'll be sore, of course, as you adapt to the workouts, but unless you're in a sport school you won't take any serious injuries.

I've taken a year of Jeet Kune Do. Had to spar at the end of the first class, so the "contact" aspect was worked from the beginning. Used 16 oz gloves, mouthpieces, and street clothes. Mostly just bruised shins from bone on bone contact... took a kick to the face once though and my nose bled.

Couldn't see any kind of good teacher allowing bones to be broken.

Brown belt in Shaolin King Fu 25-years ago. A few bruises, no broken bones. Most of the brusies were accidental hits when sparring. I would never join a style or school that required me to beat my knuckles agains boards or bricks though; old age looks tough enough without constant arthritis in every joint of the hands, but that's just me.

I was actually looking into JKD years back but the schools are limited and a bit far for after-work attending. How is it, generally speaking... because I know it's not a specific style being taught - how is such a program run? Feel free to PM... would love to know.

I'm going to get into impartial arts. That's where if there's a fight, you tend to stay out of it.

well for recreational + deadly I would choose whatever shaolin form that can break a stone pebble with fist. economical too, since one pebble will last a very long time.

if i just want to be deadly i would do muai thai. most brutal thing ive ever watched ever.
