I am very, very confused......Maybe ive been out of the scene to long

Im still trying to put together my new system, and its gone smooth so far, but now i hit a major wall. Not because i cant decide, but because i am very confused.
I am at the part of picking a graphics card (Sticking with Nvidia, theyve treated me well for so long) and, well, yea, read below for my problem.



At first i thought i was going to get a 7900GTX, when i realized that the price was to much and i didnt need 512MB memory (can we say overkill).
So i looked at a 7900GT, and for $200 less it seemed like the best option. But then i looked at the 7800GTX for the hell of it and this is where i was lost.

How is the 7900GT, which has higher core and memory clocks, cheaper then the 7800GTX?
Is there something im missing here?

Ok, but why is the 7800GTX so much more expensive for being slower and older?

and whats the stock Core and Memory speeds of the 7900GT?

The 7800GTX is made on the older 110/130 (?) nm process, while the 7900GT is made on the 90nm process. They also tweaked the design a touch as they scaled down so it is even smaller. As such they get far more cores than they do for the older 7800GTX one from the same sized silicone disc. Which means in turn that they can sell them cheaper.

The only other thing i would like to know is why are most of the 7900GT's clocked at 1320Mhz/450Mhz on newegg?
Isnt the stock 1500Mhz/500Mhz??

Newer, faster parts often sell for less than older, slower ones.

There is usually a period of overlap until the old parts stop being made and any existing stock is sold.

Ok, that settles everything then........eVGA is just kickass becuase thier selling there overclocked cards at lower prices then stock clocked cards on newegg.

Another thing to look at is that the 7800GTX was the top of the line for the 7800 series.. and top end parts usually hold the price much longer than lower spec'd parts.

Now with the refresh, the 7900GTX is the cream of the crop, has better yields on memory chips now, and costs the $500+, but the 7900GT is the next step down and demands a lower price cause it is 256megs of ram instead of 512megs, and is clocked lower.

Not sure which 7800GTX card you were looking at.. perhaps it was the 512meg version.. if so, then those sold for alot of bucks because the ram chips were hard to make (very high clocked chips, even higher than the ones on the 7900GTX cards), so they will cost much more.. even though the cards may not be the best thing out right now.

Thats what got me thinking and then confused, because i was looking at the 256MB 7800GTX's (at least thats what newegg lists them as) and i couldnt believe thatd be that much more just because of manufacturing costs.
But then again, it is a "sell for what you can" market

When looking at the 256meg 7800GTX cards, I would only get one of them if the price was lower than the 7900GT cause the GT card benchmarks faster in most cases than the 256meg 7800GTX (due to the die shrink and ability to clock higher).

Again the 7800GTX card was the top tier Nvidia card so it will keep its price much longer.. just like the 6800Ultra card did. I wouldn't worry about price here, I would just check benchmarks and go with whatever card costs less and has the best results for the games that you play.

The 7800 costs more than the 7900 because the 7800 has VIVO and the 7900 does not (except one I think).

True, the 7800 cards do have VIVO and the 7900 cards do not (at least most do not). If this feature matters alot to someone, I would just get the x1900xtx which costs less than the 7900GTX and does have VIVO on it

VIVO would not sway me that much when getting a new vid card though.. performance matters more to me.

dont know the exact speeds but the 7900 is higher.

the 7800gtx is much more expensive cause the cost to manufacture teh 512mb is just so much. your better off with the 7900
