WOW, what a change from Windows. I have Redhat 7.2 installed on a Dell C600 laptop and it went pretty good. Very little problems execpt for GRUB, which I figured out.

i am useing KDE 2.2? and I like it. I tried Gnome and it just didn't seem fun. I will try it later.

I want to express my gratitude to all here who have helped and encouraged users such as myself to try something new and non-M$.

BIG thanks to all, and for those who haven't tried Linux give it a try.

Thanks again,
Bob

cool!

I am also a recent first time Linux user and enjoy the different OS and style. I finally got KDE3 installed.

I really like Opera under Linux...

is it possible to do a dual boot with both Windows 2k and Linux. Since they both can use FAT32. At least I think the both can use FAT32, can they?

Its possible. FAT32 has almost nothing to do with it. FAT32 sucks and shouldnt be used if possible. Linux prefers ext2fs or better file systems. I still think dualbooting is a waste of time and resources.

Getting a second machine isnt too tough. And even if I didnt have a number of machines I wouldnt dualboot. The words "I think" labeled that sentence as an opinion.

Install a BSD or Debian, talk about a friggen difference... Not to bash RH or anything, but if you want a culture shock...

I have to agree with n0cmonkey dual booting is kinda lame, even though I am right now. I only do it because of hard disk space though... Only reason I keep a windows box around is for video editing. Funny thing is, half the time that I'm in windows, I'm also ssh'd into a FBSD box

Congrats! As for the dual-boot, it's a waste of time, unless you are really that dependant of Windows. As for the FAT, even if you could use Linux on it, you would be kicking yourself in the @$$ for not using ext2. Most likly you are using KDE 2.2.2, but you can always get the KDE3 tarballs. IMHO, I still like Flux better.

Yeah DUAL BOOTING is a waste of time... You need to (*counts em up*) TWELVE BOOT!! like me!

Get yourself a couple of 40GB drives... and you can be like me.. and have 11 OS's installed and working on your system... I have a couple of servers I used for Linux and OpenBSD full time... but on my Workstation, I have:

- RedHat 7.2
- Mandrake 8.2
- Slackware 8
- Debian (current)
- FreeBSD 4.5
- OpenBSD 3.0
- Gentoo Linux (current)
- BeOS 5.1
- Windows 98 SE
- Windows XP

And I have 2 other partitions I use for "testing" new installs... and right now I have ROCK Linux installed in one... and a hacked copy of BeOS 5.2 beta in the other.

Multi-booting is damn easy once you get past the first couple...

I even multi-boot on my LINUX ONLY box..just so I can keep my old version around when I am upgrading to the new version... it only takes an extra 5GB or so partition...so whats the big deal.

Needless to say I DO GET MY MONEYS worth out of Parition Magic/Boot Magic.. (thats the only thing the Windows 98 part is for)

Boot Magic is pretty nice... and I also have GRUB installed on one partition as a backup... so i can get to everything via a second route if I needed by changing the active partition.

Just go to ebay and buy a nice P2 or P3 system for cheap. I just got a 400mhz P2 with 128 mb of ram for about $80 bucks. Sure it needs a new video card but I also got that as well from ebay for about $20.00 buck ( Nvidia TnT 2 Ultra ).

Congrats. Now install Debian....

I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Sort of. Grub does have some weird syntax, but nothing too bad. Much better than LILO.

I like Gnome, but I admit I've never used KDE.

Wish I could have helped. I haven't used Debian much since I don't have internet access. That'll all change May 9th (I hope, stupid cable company). I remember installing Debian 1.3 back in the day. I had to compile Afterstep after making changes to the code (which I didn't really understand). No sound, no internet....

Very different today.

Actually he's talking about the leaked WarCraft 3 beta that is out there on the net. Anyways last I heard the leaked WarCraft 3 beta was working with no problems using WineX new 2.0 build and GTA2 well I know that there is a beta build of a PS-2 emulator floating around the net but as far as I know it only plays demos or something like that I think but I may be wrong on that part.

If you are using Linux, why bother with illegal crap software?
