That's the right answer. You GREATLY increased the surface area, so they were getting a lot more heat. You created hockey pucks. If you try it again start checking the brownies at 10 minutes and take them out at 12 even if they look a little underdone. They're continue to cook from the heat the pan is holding.
Yup - to translate this into "male" terms, imagine taking a nice steak that you would have otherwise grilled for about 10 minutes, chopping it up into a dozen pieces, then still grilling it for 10 minutes. Ugh.
