A Ford Contour is better than "econobox like Hyundai and Toyota by what standards?

I'd take an Elantra over a Contour anyday.

I have a 6 cylinder in my and it is a complete blast.

You will enjoy the V6 'Stang. Thats the only thing that matters.

Oh, and don't worry about the price of it, everyone gets taken for a little bit. Even if they THINK they know whats goin on. Dealers have to make some kind of dough.

Yawn, under powered Mustang. I guess I feel if you are going to get something that's supposed to be an iconic sports car why would you get the neutered edition?

Maybe its all he could afford...maybe its all he wanted. No need to put down his choice because its not what YOU would have done

Congrats on your purchase. All of the whiners and crybabies here should be happy for the guy instead of raining on his parade.

To each their own!

Edit: Do some research on extended car warranties and I have a feeling you'll ditch it (I believe they give you 30 days to cancel and get your $ back).

In most cases you can get your money back for the unused portion of the warranty, even after 30 days. They just dole it out pro rata.

75000 miles and 72 months of bumper to bumper?

Remember, all domestics fall apart constantly and only Toyotas can drive more than 500 miles without total engine failure..........ATOT taught me that.

because 99% of the time people do not use the extended warranty, or void it unknowingly by not performing so called "correct maintenance." But then again, you are driving a Ford, which means it may very well suffer from a mechanical malady sooner rather than later.

As far as the image, I doubt anyone is going to screen the car for a GT badge and in absence of it tell me I'm driving a piece of ******.

Well, except for ATOT.

dodge neon srt could probably beat it.

I drive a tc, and while it is a nice car, not way is an auto going to outrace anything with 40 less bhp, tricked out or no (not that a new exhaust or intake is tricked out).

wanna know why ford has the most repeat buyers every year? because all there cars break down so fast that people have to get new ones, and are too stupid to just buy from a reliable car company.

and sure there are exceptions on both sides (VW and Audi at times can be suspect on reliablility, varies from model to model), and sure you could have a ford f150 last you 15 years, but for the most part japenese>German>american, in terms of reliability, and german over anything with sleak style/design and SPEED!

German? Reliable? Hahahahahahah. Fanboys are so funny.

seconded, most german cars are not known for their reliability. Driveability yes, reliability no.

Wow. What an elitist douchebag.

How is asking someone if they area hick elitist? I am just making an educated guess based on a lot of personal experience with the hicks of western Virginia (not West Virginia, western Virginia). Tell me you have never noticed that hicks tend to drive a car that has a payment on it more than their house, er.. trailer. I'm serious, it's an actual trend out here in Va.

I don't know how I can be an elitist when I drive a Scion TC and pretty much work all the time.

And for the record, I know a lot of nice hicks.

I've seen it too...although it's usually people in trailer parks / ghettos collecting welfare and driving a new Escalade or fully loaded F250, for example. A $21k new car for someone making $40k yearly is perfectly reasonable - $21k for a brand new car is not considered expensive anymore, and really hasn't been for a while. Besides, you have no idea what his payment terms are - he could be paying it off over 7 years, for all you know.

What would you consider an "acceptable" new car OTD purchase price for someone with the OPs income?

I don't know how I can be an elitist when I drive a Scion TC and pretty much work all the time.

Assuming you bought new - the OTD price of your TC was what...$18k? (guessing - I haven't priced them out). Really not all that much cheaper than the OPs Mustang. Of course, you didn't list your income, and I'm not going to ask it.

Congratulations on making gas prices higher for the rest of us.

19/28 isn't exactly gas guzzler...

yes it is, everyone is just brainwashed into thinking it isn't.

You're speaking out of opinion, I'm speaking in comparison to other cars in its class.

Actually I thought he was asking our opinion, that' why this thread had a poll. I simply added why I didn't think it was a good choice.

IMO (and this is shared by many finanical analysts), a car payment should never be more than 10% of your net take home pay. Op's takehome pay is probably something like 2500 a month. He financed 21k. Even if he got 0% for five years that's $350 per month. Not to mention finaning a car for more than 3 years makes no financial sense whatsoever. An entry level new car (Hyundai Accent; Toyota Yaris; Scion Xa, Xb etc.) would have been more appropriate. Although I am partial to Japanese cars, there is nothing wrong with American cars per se and so an entry level American car would do the trick as well.

I used to be in the ops shoes. When I was 23 I made 36k/year working for the naval research lab as a chemist. I had to buy a car. but I didn't buy a 21k brsnd new mustang, I bought a 3 year old certified toyota corolla. Why, because I did not want to pay 20% of my salary each month on a depreciating asset.

As for my TC, I bought it for 17.5k, put 40% down and financed it for 3 years. True, it is not much less expensive than the OPs mustang, but I am in a very different financial situation than he is, in that: a) I am married with no kids (DINK); and b) I've been working for ~10 years now and make substnatially more money (not that I am bragging, a large differential in salary is to be expected between a 30 year old and a 21 year old). I could've bought a BMW, but I didn't because I still cringe at the idea of paying 30+ thousand dollars for a car. There are many other things I would do with that money. but to each his own.
