I can buy firearms?

I went to Dick's sporting goods today and went to the hunting section. It said that i can buy long firearms (shotgun & rifles) as long as i'm 18. Is this true? it also said that i can't buy handguns, but i can buy guns that are not concealable. I want to own a shotgun =) or maybe a rifle.

That's right. 18+ for long guns. 21+ for handguns and ammunition.

Not sure what good a shotguns gonna do you without ammo though.


BTW, I never quite understood why we could entrust multi-million dollar military technology to an 18 year old, but we cannot trust the same 18 year old to own his own pistol.

You CAN buy shotgun and rifle ammo @18 in the states that allow their purchase by an 18 year old. Every State has different laws regarding this. For most first time shooter a shotgun is more useful, but that depends on what you want it for.

like tominator said, you can buy a shotgun or rifle depending on your state laws, but i don't recommend buying one unless your going to use it. if your going to get into hunting, great, or if you feel you need a shotgun for home defense, which is better than a rifle. other than this, there's really no reason to own a shotgun unless shooting dirt is fun for you.

U! I have a question again. Do I need a license to own a gun? Like is it illegal to have guns in your car, public places, etc..? or is it that if you own a gun, it have to be in your house and nowhere else?

needing a permit to carry weapons depends on your state. Illinois requires you carry a Firearm Owners Identification Card any time you are carrying your guns. Nebraska doesn't, I just have to meet the federal requirements and I can carry a weapon.

Owning a sawed off shotgun can be illegal, you have to be very careful of the length, because there are laws about how short it can be.

any assault rifles produced/imported before a certain date (before the ban) are legal and i believe 18 year olds can purchase those rifles as well (correct me if i'm wrong.. please.. heh).. shotguns have to be atleast 18" i think..

I got my first shotgun at 18. Killed many a piles of trash with it ther used to be an area of town where
everyone dumped stuff at old tvs,etc we used to go out there and blast all the junk was pretty fun
we didn't shoot rabbits there was soo many around there, cause we weren't eating them and it's just
wrong to kill anything your not going to eat. kept it couple years them sold it. I don't own a weapon
anymore. but there is nothing wrong in owning a gun so enjoy!

Illinois requires a FOID just to BUY and OWN guns, it gives no special rights or privilege to carry a firearm. The FOID is required when transporting a firearm (unloaded and in a container). There is only one way an Illinois resident can carry a firearm, on his own private property, whether it be residential or business. Illinois does not issue concealed weapon permits.

Open carry, but then Nebraska is a hodge-podge of local and municipal laws which forbid carrying at all without a permit, such as Omaha.

haha, if you think a terrorist for Hezzbolah, were buying shotguns, ammunition and other equipment at gun shows to be shipped back to LEBANON, when they have easy access in their own region to a multitude of Eastern Bloc weapons for pennies on the dollar of what they sell for here, I got a 155mm Howitzer to sell ya.

I was just giving an example of how the laws vary state to state. I didn't say a FOID card entitled you to carry a concealed weapon so don't get your panties in a bunch I know the laws in Illinois too.

There is so much misinformation about this subject it's not even funny. As long as you don't live in California, anyone (over 18) can go out and by a socalled "assault rifle". When I turned 18, I went out and bought an AR15 for myself (I think that's what you mean by ar14), it remains one of the most versitile weapons I own. For small game, I pop in my 22lr conversion kit and I've got a scoped, 10shot rifle that's very accurate. For varmits or larger game (coyote's and such), I convert it back to 223. At the range, it's an excellent rifle as well. I've won many a long range shoot with it at the local club, probably get out to camp perry sometime here and see how I fare against some of the best.

Remember, assault rifle =/= fully automatic weapon. I know the PRC defines "assault weapons" as having a magazine in front of the trigger guard, like many guns do. I even recall a woman on the US Olympic shooting team who had to move out of california because they deemed her Walther 22lr pistol as an assault rifle. Fully automatic weapons ARE legal to own in some states, its just a ton of paperwork and regulations.

As far as buying your first gun, you need to do some research first. Playing counterstrike doesn't count either. Go to a local range or gunshop and talk to people. If you're interested in an AR15, check out ar15.com, they've got some good forums that will set you on your way.
