I can get an fx-55 for around $500....should I?

I've been in the market for a new cpu for quite some time now (I have a BIT of an aging 3200+ (newcastle core), and I want to upgrade. I have found a gentleman in my state who is willing to sell be a two-days used fx-55 for $515 even. It somes with the cpu and the heatsink as well as the box itself. I didnt want to spend more than $350 (was leaning towards the 3800+ x2 or the 4000+) but I froogled the fx-55 and it seems they arent selling for below $800. I'm just wondering if it's a worthy purchase OR if it's a bit like the Geforce Ultra (better technology/deals out there but high production costs are keeping the price from falling). Any insights?? Thanks.

The fx-55 should overclock higher since it uses a higher grade strain of silicon, but i don't think that you should upgrade as it doesn't sound worth it, especially if you can oc that newcastle to somehwere like 2.4

I wouldn't do it. Even at $500, they're still way overpriced. Grab a cheaper chip (X2 would be nicest) and OC it.

If you just want real-world application without overclocking it is not worth it. The 2.6 GHz over the 2.4 GHz are somewhat nice, but the bigger cache is mostly useless. The price-performance ratio of a 512 KB 2.4 GHz chip is clearly better even if you get the FX for $500.

The true benefit of the FX chips is that they don't have an upwards-locked multiplier, so overclocking is easier, quicker and somewhat safer. Most FX chips also overclock pretty well at low voltage.

You will be able to sell it on ebay for more than $500 but of course that carries other risks.

Probably because he realized he made a mistake and should've gotten an X2, and now is trying to get most of his money back.

I do.

And coming from a 3000+ @ 2.8ghz, I'll take my X2 @ 2.6ghz.. I current have AoE III running on Core 1 and itunes,AIM and every other open application and service on core 0..

That's the biggest benefit for me..

Nice, though the year would be 2002 at least since P4 2.8GHZ & Ti4600 tech didn't exist till that year.
