I have 2 hard drives. 1 is a Maxtor 20 gig and the other is a Seagate 80 gig one.

They are both IDE configuration. They came from my other rig and I never heard them running in that one (but the other rig did have 7-8 fans and was noisy)

I can sometimes hear them spinning. It is isn't really loud. Just noticeable over the general hum of the computer. Is this normal?

QFT... older drives are also usually louder.

My raptors make a LOT of noise when they are working, i can only sometimes barely hear the other drives.

depends. my dad has an old maxtor drive (8 gb he found somewhere for his files) and S.M.A.R.T. as well as any other diagnostic i've tried says it's fine but when ever it spins up it make a loud click. only then. my WD 80GB IDE is very quite though.

You should hear how a Raptor sounds in your rig. Now that's loud.

I have an old Maxtor 20GB 7200 drive and the thing is a screamer. Those drives were from before the days of fluid dynamic bearings so the old ball bearings or whatever they use start to whine a lot.

I'd ditch the 20GB drive if it offends your ears.

I have an older 10k SCSI that has a thrumm (dynamic imbalance) like a small washing machine. So be happy if your drive doesn't shake your DVD drives badly enough to cause mistracking... As others have said above, 20G drives are ancient technology now. Almost all new drives have the Fluid Dynamic bearings so about all you hear is the track seeking anymore. You can get 80G with FDB for under $50 shipped so get a new one if it's really bothering you or isolate the 20G drive from your case. Click the link in my sig for some hardware and a link to one idea for isolating HDDS.

It sure is unless you are deaf! Seriously, yes it is very normal to hear hdd spin especially during start up. It is also normal to hear intermittent clicking sound when a hdd is reading or writing. What is NOT normal is metallic/crashing/mechanical clunking noise!

Basically in the older computer the fans were louder than the disks. With computer noise, you'll notice the loudest part the most. You got rid of the "7-8 noisy fans" and so now your old HDDs are the loudest part.

My Samsung HD501LJ suspended in a P180 is almost silent. The whole t series are amazing in terms of quietness.

Man, some of those sounds are scary!

Out of my 5 HDs, only the 2 7200.10 drives make a weird sound. More like an occasional buzz or beep. From what I have read, a lot of people hear this as well with the 7200.10 drives.

A continuous high pitched whine is the spindle bearings. Those bearings do get louder with age, especially that old 20gig. The drive is probably ok, but just from the age, I wouldn't trust it too much with my data.

Anyone have any tricks to bringing back a dead drive to recover data off it? I remember someone saying they put it in a freezer?!?

Depends. If its loud clunking or mechanical crashing sounds, no way. YOu will have to dismember that hdd to get your data.

Now if it's just a matter of not being able to read while it's still spinning then the freezer trick might work.

Trial and error with one of those terrible hard drive recovery programs whilst being really gentle with it? And luck?

Otherwise if it's really important to you, you'll need to shell out to one of those data recovery companies.
