My system is an AMD Phenom II 940 @3.2GHz ,4GB DDR2, ATI 5870 1GB, I was able to run BF3 beta at all high around 40-50 fps @ 1920x1080

Really? that's good news. What kinda FPS at 1920x1080 should I get with this?

16 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (4 DIMMs)
Intel Core i7 2820QM 2.3GHz (3.4GHz w/Turbo Boost, 8MB Cache)
Dual 1.5 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M running in SLI

I plan on getting BF3 eventually, but I'm going to get Skyrim the first day it comes out....BF3 can wait a bit since the SP campaign is so lackluster, and I don't much care for playing online.

Also, Batman AC will be another great SP experience, so thats also been pre-ordered!

Don't buy BF3 for the SP unless it's under $10.

I'd get Skyrim.

Shooters haven't fundamentally changed since Wolfenstein3D for single play and since Doom for multiplay. You walk around in 3D mode at shoot at stuff .. that's it.

RPG games bring new original creative content in terms of a story and a universe. I'd say a RPG game is a more unique experience.

If you have Steam stats you might wanna look at those for comparable games in either genre and detect if there's some kind of pattern. How much game time do you typically spend on a RPG vs. a shooter? What are some of the most memorable games to you; RPG's or shooters?

If it's all equal, roll a dice..?

I would be very hesitant to call RPGs very original or creative anymore. The vast vast majority of them, including Skyrim, take place in a medieval fantasy setting. Many of them involve swords, dragons, and magic. I'm not arguing that shooters are MORE original, but I'm saying that the same problems you have with shooters seem to be present in RPGs as well. Because of that the whole post comes off as quite biased by ignoring the faults of your preferred genre.

The quests are whats original, or unoriginal. But I agree there hasnt been much improvement in setting. Most original game I can remember was Sacrifice, and that wasnt even a pure RPG. It also wasnt too popular and there was never a sequel.

Mass Effect tried to be original but still used a lot of sci-fi cliches. I had fun with it anyway. Ditto Fallout 3.
If Skyrim is loads of fun but not terribly original I would still be pleased.

RPG vs shooters - it ultimately comes down to personal preference, so in that sense yes I'm biased. I was hoping that was obvious.

While RPG's may reuse a number of known elements, there's always a unique story in some way. A RPG that just had the same story as the last one but with a bunch of new guns wouldn't get rated very well.

That's not to say all new RPG's are great pr default - far from it. It's quite possible to make a crappy RPG - DA2 comes to mind. I'm worried about the dumbing down of the genre.

But it's still a genre where we do see a fair amount of new and original content (new stories/quests/twists). Games that offer an experience that feels new. I haven't seen a shooter in years that brought anything fundamentally new to the table.

And i should at this point probably repeat that my post is not meant to be objective in any way - it's a personal opinion, take it for what it's worth.

So in addition to what is already here, here is a slightly different perspective. BF3 will probably go down in price further and sooner than Skyrim. This is in no way to say that one game is/will be better than the other. Any such statements would be subjective in any event. But it does seem to be a trend that FPS games hit the discount bin quicker and harder than TES games.

So if money is the driving factor, Skyrim. And BF3 later when it discounts.
