I'll add a few,

...Kids could eat at any neighbors house they wanted.

...Music came on 78's, 45's, and 33 1/3's

...Most kids had easy access to rifles or shotguns yet never thought of shooting other kids.

...Talking on a phone was a privilege not a thing to do when you were bored.

...Building a fort/tree house was every red blooded kids right.

...There were only 4 channels but Saturday programming for kids rocked.

...There were beat cops.

...Mail came twice a day.

...Everyone got milk delivered.

...Every kid who had a bike fixed it and/or modified it without any adult supervision.

...You could find a pick up game of baseball almost any day of the week and on Saturdays, there were enough teams to play a triple header.

Gas was $.19/gal.

You had to pierce the top of an oil can with your spout.

You never knocked on the door, during nice weather, of a friends house to call him out to play. You always started shouting when you got within 50 feet of the house in a sing song voice, "So and So, come out to plaaaayaaa."

-when you could go to a friend's house 5 blocks away by yourself without anyone caring
-you can get in fights at school and if you got hurt, you told no one and put on brave face even though it hurt like hell
-television was the sole property of adults and they dictated when/how much we could watch
-tagging was something you did physically rather than electronically
-we had plastic knives and forks rather than sporks
-playing outside was better and more fun than playing inside
-actually seeing kites for sale except that I personally could never get them to work
-pokemon was new
-duke3d was used to demo new computers
-hondas/toyotas were reliable
-it actually snowed in New York city to the tune of 2-3'

I remember when the newfangled restaurant chain McDonalds had a sign that said "500 served". And they served hot dogs and burgers.
I remember when meat and potatoes was considered healthy food.
I remember when Lincoln's birthday was celebrated on Feb. 12 and Washington's birthday was celebrated on Feb. 22
And when Columbus Day celebrated the brave Christopher Columbus for discovering our continent - it was only later when we celebrated that people already lived here.
And that Hillary was the one who first climbed Mt. Everest - not him and that native guy who went with him.
I remember when we used slide rules.
I remember buying my first calculator - HP - it was huge. And it STILL works.
I remember when a bug in the computer referred to an actual animal.
I remember corrasable paper.
I remember when it was cheaper to fix something than to throw it out.
I remember when you got measles, chicken pox, mumps, and I remember taking the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines.
I remember when you left the doors unlocked
I remenber when you got dressed up to go downtown shopping - and I remember when there still was a downtown.

My modem ran at 150bps (yes, 150bps) and cost around $300.

My 20mb drive (MFM) cost $369 and had a 4 to 1 interleve.

Two 5-1/4" floppy drives, 64k memory, and no harddrive was so cool.

1998/99?

(Was $0.49 in Corbin, KY and $0.59 in Lexington, KY in 1998. That was regular pricing, not a price war).

When gas was under a $1/gallon

When phones had those rotary things and you could get them in any color you like, as long as it was black.

When there was no internet, and television had 10 channels at best, and the one in my bedroom was a 13" black & white, and I thought it was the shit.

When computers had 4k of RAM and you had to load programs into the main memory from a cassette tape.

When Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were two pimply face teens nobody ever heard of.

We used to fill up the car for less than $5, and it was a FULL-SIZED tank with a large (20-30 gallons) tank.

Cell phones? Is that what they call from in jail? Out and about and need to make a call? There were payphones on almost every corner...they cost a nickle. People screamed when they went to a dime!

We got 3 regular channels; ABC, CBS, & NBC, plus we got PBS, but the picture usually sucked.

-when the freeway was still useful during the day

No kidding. We kept track of mileage in my step-dad's 59 Buick Electra 225 because the fuel gauge didn' work well, and it was the easiest way to know how far we could go before filling it up.

I used to buy cigarettes in the base commisary for $1.90 per carton. (yes, that's 19 cents per pack.)

Freeway? WTF is that?
I grew up in Mass where they had turnpikes, but in the early 60's, most of the interstate highway system was either still in the planning stages, or under construction. The majority of auto travel was on 2 lane US highways.

If you remember all that, you're an OLD muthafucka! (maybe almost as old as me!)

I remember the "gas wars" as a kid. Prices would drop quickly as stations competed for your business, and the plethora of "gifts" from the gas stations, ("with a minimum 8 gallon purcase") was pretty good. Hell, they used to pump it for you, check your oil, (and often, short-stick you to sell you a quart you didn't need), and wash your windshield for you...and do a good job of it too!

I only vaguely remember the Sputnik launch, but I do remember all the fuss made about it. I remember launching the chimps, then the Mercury flights, Gemini, then Apollo.

I was in the 3rd grade when JFK was killed.

As a teenager, beer could be had for less than $1 per 6 pack, milk was 50 cents/gallon, hamburger was 3 lbs/$1, and you could have a burger, fries, and soda for about 50 cents.
Movies were 25 cents for me as a kid, then 35 cents, and 50 cents. That's when I quit going to the movies regularly. Why a movie with popcorn and soda might cost a whole buck!

It's a bitch gettin old. I still remember the prices from my childhood, and looking at the current prices, I feel like I'm getting fucked everytime I buy stuff.
Of course, wages have changed slightly too. When I started working, IIRC, minimum wage was $1.25, and if you made $500/month, you were really had it made. My in-laws bought their house, 3 bedroom rancher with a full basement in 1964 for 18,000, and people thought they were nuts. When they died, (him in 86, her in 91) the house sold for $350,000.

lol my friend found a trick which worked with scientific atlantic boxes. He'd go one channel higher or lower then the one that was scrambled. Then he'd push down or up (depending if he was one higher or lower) and hold the power button down. Viola! The channel came in clear. This worked with any scrambled channel (hbo, skinemax, playboy). He'd jam a paper clip into the cable box in order to hold the power button down.

I remember when...

They actually had cartoons on Sat. morning TV. They were a big deal too- networks would make primetime premier shows for their Saturday morning lineup.

There were no convenience stores- ma&pa shops were all over the place, and they had a huge candy case by the cash register. The smart ones set up near schools and made big $$$ selling Jolly Rancher sticks to kids.

It was a big deal to have a remote control on your TV. If it had a digital channel display- HOLY COW, THAT'S LIKE THE JETSONS!

Our first VCR took up most of the top of our console TV. All TV's came in wood casings and were treated like furniture (you could buy your TV in several wood colors).

Flashcards in school were made out of leftover punch cards from computers. Disks and CD's weren't available yet, and programs were stamped into 1000's of cards, then fed into a machine.

All stores were open no later than 7 or 8, closed at 5 on Saturday, and were closed on Sundays.

There were only three networks, plus PBS, so pretty much everyone memorized the TV schedule each night. The ABC Sunday Night Movie was a big deal. ABC had rights to the James Bond movie catalog, and watching those movies with my family really played a big role in my love for gadgets and creative thinking

Popcorn was fried in oil and mixed with real melted butter. Jiffy Pop was a decent substitute. None of this microwave stuff (though I admit that microwaved corn isn't bad)

Cereal boxes came with COOL toys- games, boats that ran on baking soda, Matchbox cars, etc.

I have a lot more, but I'm getting all sentimental...

Kids don't do this anymore, I wonder why it went away.
