I cannot "restart" from WinXP, why?

I have a strange problem. Whenever I install new applications and it says I need to reboot, I press the "YES" button to do so. However the screen becomes blank and nothing happens.. monitor goes to standby mode. I have to manually press the reset button. I noticed I have this same problem when I boot to the command prompt and control-alt-delete to restart.

When I shut down my computer it shuts down normally, although it takes longer than a "normal" computer. Can anybody point me in the right direction to solve this problem?

My computer specs:

XP 1600+
Epox EP-8K7A+ motherboard
256 MB PC2100 RAM (don't know brand - just generic i guess?)
Lite-on 16X dvd
Western Digital 120 GB/8 MB cache
Visiontek Xtasy 5632 Geforce2 GTS-V 32 MB
Netgear FA311 NIC
Some generic 1394 PCI card
Generic 56k modem
ZIP 250 internal drive
Floppy drive

its the netgear card. remove that card and try to restart. if that is the problem, get a linksys card. i had the same prob, a friend identified it, and now problem solved.

You could also try switching the cards around and avoid using the PCI slot next to the AGP particularly for the network card.

If it is that Netgear card, you could try newer drivers.

I think what happens is that XP uses ACPI from the BIOS to restart the computer and something is not reseting the way ACPI expects.

Is your CPU overclocked at all?

If I push my P4 too far it won't reboot unless I manually reset it. I backed the speed down (1.8 @ 2.3, was running at 2.4), & it reboots fine.

First try updatung the drivers. I have that card and it works for me with the updated drivers.
