i just got adelphia cable internet access today and i hooked up my d-link 804 router to the cable modem so that i could have two computers accessing the internet. so far, i can only get one of my computers to access the internet. the other one will not work. at first i thought that the on-board lan was broken, so i disabled it and i installed a new nic card. yet still no luck. i even tried switching the cords around with the computer that could access the internet. i have even tried to upgrade my mobo's bios(ecs k7s5a) to see if that was the problem. still no luck. so i am wondering if there is anybody that can give me any advice? could my mobo be broken somehow? it doesn't make sense cuz when i had my modem in it, i could access the internet. by the way, i took the modem out and reformatted my computer just in case that it may have been the cause of my problem. it wasn't ;( well, thanks in advance for any help

First, stat with the simple solution.

Do you have a link light when you plug it into the d-link?

If you do have a link light, can you ping the gateway? (Usually 192.168.1.1 but check your d-link setup).

If you can't ping the gateway, make sure you IP configuration is correct.

If you can ping the gateway, then make sure your DNS records are correct (so you can resolve any webpage IP)

If you can ping the gateway, but can't bring up a webpage, try using the IP of a webpage to see if it is DNS related.

Try to drop to a command prompt and ping www.yahoo.com If this does not work, check your DNS setup.

Did it ever occure to you that Unknown8585 may not have his TCP/IP set up correctly?

Here is the best advice if running 9x: clear out all network settings in Network Neighbourhood.

Then re-install Client for Microsoft Networks.

Then re-install TCP/IP.

The re-install your nic. Set up your TCP/IP bound to the nic. If using DHCP from the router then check that off too.

Then set up IE to connect to the net.

i tried pinging, but that didn't work. i think my ip configs are set up correctly(by the way, i have xp and so the tcp/ip are already setup for me). it's wierd, i just compared the ip address on the one computer that doesn't work to the one that works and the ip addresses are completely different even though they are connected to the same router. the one that is working starts with 192 and the other one starts with 162 or something like that. if i unplug the ethernet cord from the lan, it shows that the computer is disconnected until i replug the ethernet line into it. thanks for the help though....

Unknown, can you ping 127.0.0.1?

I am assuming you have both computers set to obtain IP's automatically... you may use Winipcfg (ipconfig for NT or XP), and hardcode the non-working computers' settings.

Your IP Configuration (TCP/IP Setttings) are wrong. Your d-link will work on the /24 subet, so use the following for the pc's you add. Try adding :
IP: 192.168.1.05
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

See if you can ping the 192.168.1.1 IP after these settings are in place. If this works, then your DHCP config is incorrect. If you want to take advantage of the features of the d-link (most allow port forwarding, DMZ host, etc), you're better off using static IP's but that is up to you...

Wiping out your TCP/IP stack or uninstalling your NIC is one of the LAST steps in the troubleshooting process?
What's your great idea if he isn't running win9x (like you apparantly are)?
He who seems to know very little, should be a little more humble when confronting people who know more about networking then you. You just showed how little you know, Mr. Win9x!

this is sooo wierd.

i manually entered an ip address and a dns address and NOW IT WORKS

i don't understand why it won't do it automatically from the router. it doesn't make sense. i've been trying to think of the reason why it wouldn't, but i can't think of it. it must be hardware related cuz i reformated my comp a few times to see if that would work and it didn't.

well thanks everyone for your help

if anyone understands why this solved my problem, please post it here. my curiousity will make me check this thread periodically.

You must enter the IP on your computer manualy if you don't have DHCP serving turn on the router.

As someone else suggested, check to make sure you are getting link lights on both ends. If your system is not communicated with the DHCP server it may be a problem with the physical connection, we know that system is set to "optain IP automatically" because of the APIPA address you are recieving and the DHCP server works because the other system recieves a correct IP. If there is a valid connection, you may try assigning that system a static IP address of 192.168.1.42 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and see if that fixes the problem.. hope this helps ..

hey neural, thanks for your help, but your suggestion was exactly the way that i fixed/solved my problem. the question i am wondering now is why did it work? why does it not automatically detect the ip address like it should and like the other computer is doing? again, i am just asking because i am curious.
