I used to be able to crank out 20 push ups at a time. I just started going to the gym with my buddy doing some weight training. This is the first time I did any meaningful weight training. I went to go do some push ups to warm up before our work out (this is the third day into our weight training) and I can't even do one. Its been 4 days since I tried doing push ups, and I still can't even do one. Also, The first day I was able to bench press more than I am now. What is happening to me?

You've gotten older and probably haven't worked out much. Do the push ups from your knees and work back up. If you keep at it, you'll get there again. It'll just take some hard work.

I remember when I could barely do 5 unassisted chin ups. I just did 18 the other day..You just need to keep at it.

What is your weak point in the pushup? Is it hard to keep your body rigid? Do you not have the arm strength to push all the way up? Do you not have the chest strength? What is giving out first?

Also, how much do you weigh?

Great you are getting back but if 20 pushups were your best it's going to be a hard road up

You probably have some mechanical issues. If you have insurance get your doc to seek them out.

How much can you bench press? A push up should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 70% of your weight. Work your bench press up to that amount and then you should be able to start doing pushups, assuming your weak areas aren't your legs or core.

Do tricep extensions on the machine, that may help.
Then flys on that other machine. See where you are weak, pecs or triceps.

Are your forearm muscles rock solid or floppy like a 3rd chin? I don't do weights at all.

When I hit my limit, the place I feel the most burn is the muscle adjacent to my elbow and my triceps.

If you want to get back to doing push-ups, just do an easier version until you can get back to normal push-ups. Push-ups on your knees are a good place to start. Once you can do 10-15 of those, you can try to do a few regular push-ups. When you can do a few normal ones, just keep doing them throughout the day. It'll get easier.

What? What about his subjective report makes you think it's a mechanical issue? Not being able to do a push-up does not constitute a reason to go see a doctor. It constitutes a reason to get to the gym 3x per week. Sounds exactly like detraining. He needs to work his way back up.

lol bro. Because he should see a doctor first if he is having issues.

I know you think you are one, but you are really not and you give a lot of bad "textbook" advice here, kid.
