In your Hardware Device Manager, do you even see it listed? Mine just says USB 2.0 Root Hub and when I go to properties, it says it is a NEC. I did not install the software and let Windows XP install whatever software was needed.

Here's my list:
General Purpose USB Hub
Generic USB Hub (Belkin 4 Port powered Hub)
Intel(r) 82801ba/bam usb universal host controller - 2442
" - 2444
microsoft natural keyboard pro composite device
nec pci to usb enhanced host controller b1
nec pci to usb open host controller
"
USB 2.0 Root Hub

I let Windows XP install everything and did not use the Asus cd for anything in my clean Windows XP Por installation.

What happened when you installed the driver? Did the install go OK according to the Windows installer splash screen? It seems like something must have gone wrong since it's not showing up in your Device Manager listing.

I got my USB 2.0 driver from Windows Update and it show up just like rgowen's does.

I'd go back to Windows Update and try and get the driver again. If it's not installed, it should let you get it again.

If the regular site won't let you get it again, go to the Windows Corporate Update Site. Here you can download updates, patches and drivers to your HDD and install them whenever you want. That way you can play around with this USB 2.0 driver until you can get it to work for you.

unlike rgowen, i don't see the usb 2.0. i guess this is what you're referring too. well, i did check that link you gave me, but there are no drivers for the nec's usb 2.0. i guess i already have them installed but it's not working for some reason.

i guess i'll have to try to format my hd and reinstall win xp.

thanks for your help and i'll update again if it doesn't work.

My list looks pretty much like rgowen's does. I'd check the manual to see if you have any PCI cards in the wrong slots that aren't sharing the IRQs with the NEC USB 2.0 controller chip. Also, make sure you have the controller hub (4-port add-on card) plugged into the correct 2 spots on the motherboard. Hint: they're blue.

Good luck!

I have a P4B266 and also do not see a specific device listed for a USB 2.0 hub. I downloaded the update from the Asus website and according to the accompanying documenation, successful installation should be reflected by "asustek usb enhanced host controller" appearing in the device list. Would one need an actual USB 2.0 device plugged in for the hardware manager to recognize the 2.0 hub?

You could always try plugging a mouse into it and see. Look on page 2-24 of the manual, make sure the USB 2.0 jumper is enabled. Also, I did not download anything from the Asus site. everything was just clean install of Win XP Pro, and then Windows Update. This is the only USB Update from my MS list on the installation history: Microsoft Usb Driver Version 5.1.2600.0. Hope that helps some.

I'll check that jumper when I get home, but the manual states default is "enabled" and I never touched it. I have four "USB Root Hub"s in my device list, just no "USB Root Hub 2.0." I plugged in a mouse and digital camera into two of the four USB 2.0 sockets and they work, indicating to me the connection is correct to the motherboard. Strange....

Well, my jumper was factory-set to disable USB 2.0. I changed this jumper, detected new hardware and..... still nothing. The 4 USB ports run to the 2.0 header work, but my Hardware Manager does not list a 2.0 Root Hub.

From what I've read elsewhere and on Microsoft's site (I am running XP Home, BTW), there is no Microsoft native USB 2.0 driver yet available. Accordingly, a running Windows Update is not going to detect anything. I have installed the latest Asus USB 2.0 driver from the website (newer than the version on the provided CD), but still no dice.

I think I'll check in with Asus Tech Support on this one.

didn't you say that yours works??? well i hope it at least working for you. mine is still not working and i checked the jumper, blue pins, looked for new drivers, even tried to move my lan pci card to see if there was a conflict. everything is negative. i'm going to try format my hd and do a clean start and hopefully that'll work (running win xp pro).

well anyways, tell me if it works out ronkatcher and thanks for the help everyone else. still trying to figure this one out... =(

EDC03: All of my USB ports work, including those run to the 2.0 header on the mainboard. What I am NOT seeing is a USB 2.0 hub appear in my device list as others here have reported. Leaving me with the question of whether my system has everything it needs to support 2.0 or not...

I never installed any of the drivers from the Asus site or cd. I had the USB 2 bracket plugged in and my extra hub plugged into it when I installed Win XP Pro and ran Windows Update when finished and above is what is listed in my hardware manager. I think with the 2 plugs I have the one close to the mb going to the bottom plug and the other one going to the top. Maybe try switching yours to see if it does anything.

i'm at work so i can't list what i see in my device manager. but i think i got my usb 2.0 to work. i put in my mouse and my keyboard and it detected new hardware, so i guess it's working. however, i didn't see a usb 2.0 in my device manager listing. but i also, didn't dl the usb driver on the microsoft website, b/c i was afraid it would make my 2.0 stop working. but i guess i'll go ahead and dl and install it. so basically, i'm having the same problem as RonKatcher.

but since i haven't dl'ed and installed, this will probably fix my problem. thanks all you guys for all your help. i love the anandtech forums.

and for those of you who might be having the same problems, i fixed it by changing the pci slot i put my lan card in. i had my lan card in slot 4, and it didn't work. but then i changed it to slot 3 and formatted my computer, and my usb 2.0 started working immediately. i guess it was a conflict with the irq's or something. so if you're having a problem, check this:

jumper enabled
try to dl new driver (don't need to if you're using win xp)
change pci slots b/c of conflicts with other cards

Hmmmmm.... My only card is my modem. Perhaps I'll move it and see if there is any effect. Once XP releases the native 2.0 driver, this might solve any conflict issues.
