It's the way it is on Anandtech...

FWIW, cops I know keep a reference book in their cars where they can look up the laws if necessary. I would expect a cop to know traffic laws pretty well.

I think the OP shot himself in the foot when he made it about race and/or social class.

Cop probably would have just handed him his ticket and left.

Because people love to rebel and try to prove "The Man" wrong anytime they can. There are times and places to pick your battles, and a traffic stop really isn't one of them unless you want a lot of headaches.

In my state, not having proof of registration would result in me receiving a ticket, and then getting it dismissed after a $10 fee and showing them the proper paperwork.

Because there WAS NO MISTAKE MADE!!! My brother had all his information in order. There was nothing more he could have done. HE WAS LEGAL!

In reference to the surgeon defense earlier, if a surgeon doesn't know the anatomy and messes up, he's gotta pay, lots and lots of $$$. If a cop doesn't know the laws and tows your car, what can you do? I'm sick of these "inconvineince crimes" like burglary, "oopsies" by the police, drunk driving that, if the people ever get caught, get at most a slap on the wrist. If I had my way, the guy(s) that broke in and stole the crap out of my car would be doing 5 years or the 5-finger payment plan, their choice! I had a sociology professor just a couple of years ago that was an ex-prison guard and brought in some cases of his former inmates. The average sentence served for manslaughter was 7 years! Holy crap, you kill someone and get an average of 7 years? I wouldn't be surprised if burglary gets a suspended sentence, community service, and a fine! Damnit, lock them the hell up!

You don't think having someone's car towed and impounded is abuse of power even though the cop knows he is in the wrong?

You're placing the blame on the wrong people. The DA is the one who is going to prosecute and go after harsher/softer sentencing.

Maybe you are right and i should not have mentioned the race thing, even though I think it is a possibility. I just should not have mentioned it.

How do you know that the cop knows that hes in the wrong? The cop could've thought that he was correct, and that this was just another person trying to quote him some incorrect information about laws (that happened to be correct this time).

Is that legal? It seems like a good idea to be used for more than just abusive police officers.

JohnPaul,

When he goes to court, yes he will pay the fine for speeding..Thats not as easy as pleading "NOT GUILTY" to the other offenses. Alot of cops give out un-necessary tickets. I think we ought to be able to defend whats right and not.

I don't see how it could be illegal.

Usually videotaping or recording on private property (your home, or it may even apply to your car) requires consent depending on your state/local laws. In some cases, like in your home, it may require only 1 party consent (yourself), or it may require both parties consenting.

Its really not that hard for the cop to check... sh!t, he could have called another officer who knew had better knowledge of the traffic laws.

Yes he should've. Repeatedly, I've said the cop fvcked up. But contrary to what the OP believes, I do not think the officer was a Racist Pig, for lack of a better term.

Look, I never called him a racist pig, I only stated that it is possible, since there was no other reason for his douchebaggery, that it could have been color related. Hell, if I were black, i would be a bit angry over my situation and what happened in the past to their people, but I wouldn't let it spill over into my job.

I'm quoting this gem just in case you decide to edit it out.

Yes. When you are in public, you have a much lower reasonable expectation of privacy. There is nothing illegal about putting a video camera in your car. There is nothing illegal about video taping a traffic stop.

How about the cop knowing the law that they are charging you for? We have no excuse not to know laws, and neither do they. Ignorance is not a valid excuse..

Plus the OP is probably full of one sided sh!t and it was the guys fault.

Not true. In certain states, there are laws such as eavesdropping laws which require you to get the consent of a person before recording their voice.
