It is looking like you are not understanding Indian accents, is this correct?

I am understanding, please give me a few minutes while I am looking into this issue.

You've spent too much time dealing with call centers.

I can understand it but I don't like the way it sounds. I'm pretty sure even Indians don't like the sound. Russell Peters confirmed this.

This is something I don't really get. You are correct. There are tons of accents that are hard for me to understand. There is this guy in one of my games who is from Scotland, I can't understand a damn word he says, yet I love hearing him talk. Why is this? Why do accents from most European countries sound awesome and crack me up, while other accents like Indian just annoy me? Am I just racist?

i feel sorry for indian support centres. they can be hard work sometimes, but they're always polite. i could never do CS work. they amount of verbal abuse they must suffer, im not surprised some of them are smoking weed during their shift

Those English accents you guys are talking about aren't accents, they are completely different dialects, and could even be considered different languages. Some of those dialects like Welsh are as different from regular English as Old English or at least Elizabethan English. That's the way languages are, and it highlights how stupid it is to call ebonics (which doesn't refer to slang btw) as "bad English". It's as bad as Welsh. A major contributor to "ebonics", btw, was Irish English speakers, who worked alongside slaves. If you notice similarities between the Irish accent and American blacks, that's why.

this, i've never had a hard time understanding someone speaking english with an accent, but i met some aussies in japan once and it was a nightmare. i suppose it was because i expected good english to come out, so i wasn't trying hard...but he had to say it to me like 4 times before he finally slowed down enough and opened his mouth real wide:"SHOW-ER OR SHIT-ER!?"

lol, i'll never forget that, but he was nice as hell.

Hardest accent to understand for me is Indian, with a thick New England accent coming in a close second. I get all kinds, from french canadian to those nice southern drawls...but nothing beats the accent from Cork, Ireland.

I don't mind Indian accents, I guess since I work with so many of them it all makes sense now. I still have a hard time keeping a straight face when they say the word "beach" though.

Agreed. I used to work with a girl that was Chinese, and while she was very nice, I couldn't STAND her accent. It made me want to punch her in the face every day. She used to always stop by the cube across from mine and ALWAYS started with "Hi Shaaaa, how aaahhh yuuu."

Like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Why people dislike some accents is always interesting to me. I remember when I was hanging out with a French girl how she described why she hated the American accent. She said it was so nasal as if we are talking out of our nose instead of our mouth. I never noticed that personally until she said that.

Forgive my cluelessness, but what does the anand part mean? A quick google search finds an Indian chessmaster and a Hindi film. All this time and I've never actually known the meaning. I figured it was a reference to a NAND gate or something. Is it actually a reference to something Indian?

well I gotta say this... I had to go back and forth on the phone with Amazon.com support and had to deal with the accents like 3 or 4 times. The last person - as soon as he said hello I said to myself "oh no not again". It's just a lot harder when you've already got issues and have to reason with them, let alone try and make out every word they're saying. BUT this last guy, although he had the thickest accent, was actually the most helpful. I just wish I could understand them easier. Their reps should be screened for thick accents.

I really didn't like his attitude and said to him. Hi doc, I thiink I know you. He looked over at me and said, I do not think so. I said, sure I do, I spoke to you last week on the phone at Dell support. He stomped out of the room. Me and my doc had a good laugh.

Haha, hilarious!...

Edit: nevermind, there are just some people that give all Americans a bad name on this forum.

My philosphy is if you're going to speak Urdu, Hindi, or one of several languages that Americans can usually speak, since we're usually bi- or tri-lingual (obviously) then please use a good accent. I for example speak french like a frenchman and italian like an italian because that's the only proper way to do it when I'm in Europe. Not speaking multiple languages perfectly is a crime in my book.

When it's part of your job to speak another language you should at least be good at it.

well unfortunately, it's your desire for cheaper goods that has service outsourced to india, so you should deal with it. personally I have no problem with it.

The thickest accents are from all those Asian countries like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. Their languages are all really funny sounding and tonal, and it comes out in their English.
