I can't update to Marshmallow using just an OTA update file can I?

My Nexus 7 2013 is currently still on KitKat. The only Marshmallow files available for my model (that I can find) are the OTA update files, so about 380MB.

I'm guessing that I can't just update directly to Marshmallow from KitKat using the downloaded OTA file right?

Correct, you need to update to Lollipop then to Marshmallow.

Do you not have an update pending to bring you to Lollipop? I would just follow those until you get to 5.1.1, then you can flash the M OTA update.

5.1 on the N7 2013 was a great update.

But yeah, do what basslover1 said.

I'd use the factory images:

Of course the downside is that you have to wipe the entire thing, but I prefer that anyway. I've been very happy with Marshmallow on the N7, which was not the case (even with a clean install) of Lollipop so... flash with confidence.

I updated using the Google factory images linked above.

It's very interesting that Android does seem to have one "unified" image for all devices (at least all Nexus devices) yet. What if you have an older Nexus and it doesn't get an Android update specifically geared for it?

Then you don't get an update. Or you have to wait for the community to cobble something together. Even Nexus devices aren't immune to losing support eventually.
