That thing is gonna be uber nasty, i would not mind dropping the money @ release if it leaves me set for another 4-5 years of PC gaming at it's best.

Yeah it should be pretty good.

Barts and Cayman threads should be kept separate, especially when the current Barts thread is so huge. Who the heck wants to sift through all of those posts to find Cayman info?

in the history of gaming, no card has ever set someone up for 4 years of gaming. at the most, this will set you up for 3 years.

personally, i like to go mid-range and upgrade every ~16 months

If you run duel 6990s you could probably slip by for 4 years if the Crossfire matches the improvements we've seen with the 6800 series cards.

Maybe in 4 years games will be able to actually make use of 4 GPUs in XFire/SLI.

unfortunately now that PC games are mostly console ports, a 6990 may very well last 4 years...

If not this generation, next generation with a relatively huge die-shrink + superior Architecture I think we'll have more power then we know what to do with, while console players finally get to play games natively rendered in 1080p - we'll be wondering how we are going to afford 21 monitors for our new eyefinity setup. PC gaming is thankfully still alive and well but graphical advancements seemed to have pretty much stopped...crysis is still "the benchmark" and its from Nov. 2007

A 6990 would likely be awfully expensive. I think the 6950 in Crossfire will be the more attractive buy. Just overclock the suckers.

But we'll have to wait and see. My 5870 just plummeted in value today with the release of the 6870, so I can't even sell my current card for probably more than $240.00. I'm wondering if it'll be worth it to sell my 5870 when the 6950 debuts.

My 8800GTX is still good enough for me, I'm currently playing bad company 2 at 1920x1080.

Really wish I could afford that dual gpu 6900 but it'll be like 650 bucks, easily. Way too much, I've never spent more than 350 for a GPU. Besides not so sure my Phenom II @ 3.5 ghz would feed it enough, and I'd have to upgrade that, too. Being on top is expensive!

Think we'll find out by the end of December just how monstrous the HD6990 really is.

Why did God make me so impatient? (I hope I haven't got the wrong thread for this question)

I eagerly await the 69xx series.

Yep it'll be another month of Sid Meier's Pirates and NBA Jam on my wii..

so we dont have anything more concrete than "mid-Nov" for Cayman?

Was hoping the NDA lift would result in a published schedule...

where will the numeric product numbers end ? 9990 ?

then what ?

ATI already went around the loop from the 9700 Pro days. . .as I recall they added an X after that and started again at 0, although the X changed to HD when that became fashionable.

Since the first Radeons (at least the earliest I know of) were the 7000 series, we're closer to that dilemma than you'd think.

Uhh, the 5870 should still be worth more than $240 even used. It beats out the 6870 new and at the same price.

4-5 years might be a tad optimistic, but year 3 I'd say you'd be itching to upgrade again with new hardwares on the market.

I am still loving my 4870x2. With the accelero slapped on it. It still hangs with the big boys. No DX11, but beyond that, still a great GPU.
