I've gotta agree with you on that. We stopped watching it a few months ago for the same reason. Still Tivo it every Sunday, just don't watch it.

I dunno, they do good things overall which is a nice change from Worm Eating, competing in convoluted challenges, Modeling, getting a job, etc ect that passes for TV these days.

Well, actually, a large audience means good sponsors, and it keeps the funding for the show going.

They could spend half as much and build a normal size house for the families without going over the top... that way they could help more people out. Obviously, though, that's not what they're aiming for.

Bingo.

Helping these people would mean fixing the existing house, adding on PRACTICAL additions, and helping them manage the day-to-day that they go through.

Not building a fucking barn that is a giant playhouse for the kids

that's how they started, but after a while they began just tearing down the houses and building new. They need the sponsors to want to participate, and that means building extravagant and amazing houses they companies can use for PR and marketing.

Wow....he had a horrible, horrible wife to leave him and her kids.

is this the show that kept getting in trouble because the houses they were building were crap?

they would cut corners and people would have to hire people to come in in a few years to fix stuff ? or was that the other "make over" show.

True, but still not the same.

They gave a house tonight on the show to a truly deserving guy. He has more guts, more courage, more selflessness than all of us combined.

That's all I could think of the whole show..."I wonder what this crappy excuse for a woman is doing now."

However, as many know my wife was a cop, and she noticed that for half the show this guy's pupils were dilated big time. She wondered if he was on something or if it was a result of medication. The lights on the cameras should have been super bright, so his pupils should have been little dots. Drug problem?

I remember one episode where they had a wall of 6 big screen TVs, one for each kid in the house - they all had headphones for their personal TV. What an extravagant waste.

my sentiments exactly. what about people who DON'T EVEN HAVE HOUSES? sure some people deserve a better place to live but they became TV station's ratings tool.

this is sort of like pimp my ride... how about the people who have to walk 30 minutes to public transit and transfer 2 buses and a subway ride to get to work?

Exactly, I feel the same way. I really liked it when the series first started, but now they just go way too overboard. I would rather see them do something sensible and help 5 families in need rather than helping one 5 times more than they need.

There were some pretty emotional parts tonight, but the military grandstanding was over the top and killed the mood.

We need one of the network news magazine shows (like Dateline) to do a follow-up on the Extreme Home Makeover winners from the past; break down the numbers into how many still own their home, and how many were sold. It would also be interesting to find out if the lure of money from the sale of the homes broke up any families.

Wow...lot of killjoys here. "Everyone's feeling happy! Let's bring them down man!"

Sorry to ruin it for you, but in tonight's show, a support group for injured Marines paid off the guy's mortgage, so he's payment free.

The lure of selling has nothing to do with the mortgage. It's simply that they build over-the-top homes that are worth so much money, families are lured by the potential profit from selling.

Did they pay his car payments too? What about credit card debt? Most American families have both, and I'm sure pocketing $100k+ from selling your "Extreme" home would help pay those down.

I would love a [fair, balanced and unbiased] review and follow up like that.

Tax implications, who legally owns the structure & land, how many have sold their homes, where they are now financially, are they better off, etc.?

My brother was on the Maryland build a couple weeks back. He said the Ty dude showed up for a few scenes when they needed him, took credit for building the whole house and barn, and then flew off to the next job like he's some sort of movie star. He couldn't even be bothered to stop by the after-party and thank the crew for working 24 hours a day for a week straight so their show would be done in time. Evidently he did stay long enough to get thrown out of a local bar (Looney's Pub) for being too drunk, although that's just hearsay.

They were just in Mobile, AL. I tried going by there after work, but they wouldn't let anyone through after dark.

I heard on one show that no one has sold their house.

Well one thing of note, besides the houses they VERY often do help out the family. In many episodes they gives tens of thousands of dollars to college funds for the kids, medical supplies and such for those that need it etc etc. They even in one episode found the dad a job IIRC.

Needless to say, over the top or not, the shows certainly help these people (in most cases) on some levels.

And yes, when I watch it I tear up too. Nothing wrong with that (though my wife mocks me). I like to show my kids the show too. Especially the beginning and show them that not everybody has a nice warm, comfy place to call home.
