Ok I tried to figure this out and gave up. My dad's piece of sh*t computer (celeron rig) has been fu*ked up since I built it. Mainly cause I went cheap and bought a PC Chips motherboard. Well first the the computer runs slow. I can't even run Quake 3 above 640*480 cause it's too slow. Normal windows tasks like the internet and word processing are ok though. Well I found out why look at these memory benchmarks... Sandra 2000 Memory Benchmark and Sandra 2001 Memory Benchmark. Why are they like this? The ram is good because I tested it in my other Athlon system and I tried other ram. Same results. Next problem hard drive speed. This may be a small hard drive but it supports ATA/33 or it should not be this slow. Hard Drive benchmark... Sandra 2001 Hard Drive Benchmark. I could probably fix this with a driver update cause that's how I fixed this problem on my other motherboard. This motherboard uses the GFX PRO chipset. Please help! I want to actualy use this computer for games other then DOOM!!!!!!!

Can't it's not my computer and I don't want to pay for it anyway. My dad's said he wouldn't pay for it cause runs fine for what he want to use it for(internet and word processing).

HAHA! Yeah well thats what most dads say! I use it for Word processing and Internet. "No Gaming on my computer and no Quake 3ing Doodoo, so screw you!" Thats what most dads say. So the only good thing is to do is download flash upgrades and stuff or newest drivers and upgrade the lot and see what happens. Thats the only cost effective way of doing this!

GFX pro chipset?...hmmm...never heard of it...perhaps that's due to my lack of research of intel chipsets...anyway,

i suggest downloading/installing latest bios drivers, and enable DMA mode (i.e. UDMA mode 2) on your hdd...

as for the memory performance...no idea - it seems almost too low to remedy...maybe sisoft isn't benchmarking it correctly (because of the sh1te, not-so-popular chipset and perhaps sh1te drivers...

only thing u can do is:

1) update to latest bios and chipset drivers.

One reason for the memory benchmark being so "horrible" is that Sandra bases the whole thing on the bus speed it is running at, hence the higher scores for all AMD based systems with ddr bus. The only fix to this is to overclock. And you might want to check his pci bus multiplier because it might be trying to take the 66 mhz bus and use a pci ratio of 1/3(meant for 100mhz bus, not 66). The ratio should be 1/2 and if it is 1/3 that will solve your hard drive's problem.

DMA is enabled and I think the benchmarks are correct because the computer is going so slow! I would download the latest drivers but I don't know where to find them. Also I think the motherboard has the latest bios.

The processor is overclocked it is running at a 83.3MHz bus. Also it is overclocked with CPU Cool software because the motherboard only supports a 66, 100, and 133 bus and it will only let me run celerons at 66MHz bus for some reason. Even when I set the jumpers to 100MHz it still goes to 66MHz.

What's the model number of the MB?
Alot of PCCHIPS MB's spport EDO memory, any chance it has EDO and not SDRAM?
Have you tried bumping up the mem timings up?

shawnmos: first, not trying to talk down here but you really need to give your system info when asking questions like this. I know there's a link to your rigs, but when I cruise into a thread I don't want to hunt down your info. Onto your problems.

second, the onboard sound is probably spanking you, try disabling it and seeing whot kind of game play you get, if itis spanking you then go get a cheapo $15 sound card (ESS or something similar).
third, is the HD on its own channel or is it sharing with that generic cdrom? If it is sharing I'll bet the cdrom isn't UDMA and that means the HD won't run at UDMA as long as they are on the same channel. Isolate the HD on it own and then try you benchmark.

You are taking the wrong approach here. You want to download all the bloatware plugins that you can to make that thing run slow as a dog. When its so slow that your dad can't take anymore, he'll finally give in and make you buy something faster.

Come on peps, it's not that hard to click the little rigs link but since you guys are lazy I'll type it up. It as Celeron 600@750 (83.3MHz bus), PC Chips M754LMR Motherboard, 128 MB PC100 Ram, TNT2 AGP video, QUANTUM Bigfoot 4.0 GB hard drive ATA/33, 40x CD-ROM with DMA support, Running Windows ME. I think that's about it. The hard drive is on IDE 1 and the CD-ROM is on IDE 2. DMA is enabled on the hard drive and cd-rom. Oh yeah and the motherboard supports up to PC133 ram.

rbloedow: goto system in the control panel and double click on your hard drive. If DMA is checked then it's enabled.

How much crap does he have running in the background? Stuff running in the background could throw off benchmarks quite a bit, especially if it is a resource hog like Norton Antivirus

When I took those benchmarks, nothing. It looks like the GFX PRO chipset I have is made by ALi. I found the website and just downloaded the AGP Driver, the IDE Driver, and the IDE Utility (whatever that is). I am going to install them and see what happens.

Oh, sorry, somehow I wouldnt have thought this one of your "cool rigs".....
Just as a sanity check, have you tried it at 600?
I'd also try a different stick of memory, maybe the bios is picking the wrong settings for it as it sure looks more like EDO benchmarks than SDRAM.

Well I updated the drivers and the hard drive is still running at the same speed. The ALi IDE Utility says it running at UDMA 33 so I dunno. Strangely the memory benchmarks incresed a little bit.
